Which would you prefer to be?

I am currently studying film and media at uni so this is an interesting question. I really want to direct, but only really want to direct my own stuff. I feel it may be easier to get a screenplay made if I'm not attached to direct, so I can see screenwriting being my primary area of work. Saying that, i also edit (poorly), which I would definitely consider doing on a production, even if its not my own source material. I find editing really fun.
