Rate the last film that you've watched

Postby VaderBomb » Oct 13, '13, 12:31 am

The classic NoDQ thread. I was hoping that he would've show up while I was at work today, but he's not here yet so this should stickied as a topic in this section.

Watched a couple awesome films the other day that I've been meaning to catch for awhile now.

My Dinner With Andre - 8.5/10 - Intelligent, existential, philosophical conversation based film from Louis Malle. One of the more unique films that I've seen, almost the entire film is based around one conversation at a restaurant between two men involved with theatre. Great stuff.

Mystery Train - 8.5/10 - Beautifully shot Jarmusch color flick about a bunch of different characters floating around Memphis.

Tootsie - 7.5/10

I watched this film last night for the first time. I was really impressed with it. I thought it was particularly clever in its execution. It is a movie that made feminist issues a lot more accessible and understandable to men and it really makes you think about gender roles. But it did it without being patronizing and most importantly, it was a comedy. How many smart comedies have even seen the light of day in the last decade? We need more comedies like this one in the world - that actually have something to say.

Dustin Hoffman was excellent in it too. That part must have been really difficult to portray without going way too hammy and just killing a lot of what made the film so interesting. It loses points in some places because I thought it could have been a little tighter and it suffers from some mild pacing issues that were probably common enough in films around that time. But overall I thought it was well worth the watch, and it surpassed my expectations.

American Pie: Reunion. 7/10.

It is what it is. A gross out comedy. And that's all it tries to be. But there is some heart in it as well. An improvement on wedding and definitely an improvement on all the straight-to-dvd released. There were some moments that had me laughing at out, even if it did make me seem immature.

Sticky'd!

Terminator 2 - I've seen this a bunch of times, but I always enjoy it. Many people consider it to be the greatest action movie of all time, and while I might not go that far (I'm hesitant to call things the greatest ANYTHING), it really does have everything you could ask for in an action movie: great fight scenes, great chase scenes, great one-liners and mothafuckin Arnold Schwarzenegger. Probably a solid 8.5 from me.

Holes - 6/10

It's not a great film by any means - but it's pretty entertaining and raised a few laughs. It's one of those films where several sub-plots all come together in the end, and it does so fairly well. Not a great film, but I'd watch it again.

Couldn't agree more.

Pacific Rim - 8/10

I rather enjoyed it, it was great to see Charlie Day play a scientist after watching so much its always sunny. The story wasn't all that great but how can you dislike a movie about giant Mech suits vs Monsters. I would recommend this movie.

Eugene Levy was the best part of that movie by far.

The Heat - Didn't think I'd enjoy this. But I did. The story was nothing to write home about but the performances of Bullock and McCarthy were excellent. Just enough laughs for me to be satisfied. 6/10.

Mean Streets- 8/10

I really liked the character of Johnny Boy, I thought De Niro played him excellently. Keitel also played the role of Charlie well.

Good film.

The image of Viazon and his equally odd mates all sat outside the supermarket eating chicken together in the car is too much :lol

Just watched Fargo for the first time ever yesterday. I'd heard a lot of good things and this is one that had slipped through the cracks for a while. Overall it was good, but I don't think it quite lived up to the expectations I'd had going into it. Some great black humor in it and solid writing and overall I enjoyed it, but I wouldn't classify it as an overly memorable film. 7/10.

Yep, My Dinner with Andre is a masterpiece and one of my favourite films. I was just enthralled from beginning until end. Impeccably written and raises so many interesting questions about who we are and what our purpose is. A lot of films tackle these large subjects but not in the same light as Malle's film did. I recommend Murmur of the Heart if you haven't seen it, mate. My personal favourite from Malle.

Too true, although I have only seen the first 3 and Reunion, didn't bother with the other ones because they looked like crap.

Just had a re-watch of The Hobbit. I think I still feel pretty much the same way about it this time as I did on my first time watching it. Entertaining movie, has plenty of charm but lacks the overall quality of the original trilogy. Plus, the Radagast stuff is just... not good. 7/10.

Pretty much spot on. It made that whole middle section really clunky too, especially the god awful chase sequence on the bunny sled.

I'd give Captain Phillips 8/10 for a dramatic and entertaining screenplay that kept a solid pace through-out and delivered a solid performance from Tom Hanks.

I hated The Hobbit. It frustrated me as it should have been so much better than it actually was. I'd give it a 5.5, nothing more.
