So, I was pretty much bang on with Sansa. Her character is pretty much the same as season 1/2 now and I don't really get why they went this route.

Awesome.

Yup. And they added an almost-rape for no reason. :jerk

Seriously, it's fine if rape is an unpleasant fact of the world they've built, but it shouldn't be inserted in every bloody story.

Did anyone actually think they'd succeed in raping Gilly? The way the scene was set up left me with no actual fear for her safety, and then - because I already thought the guys would fail at rape - it made sense that they'd fail at overcoming Sam as well; so no real fear for him either.

Couldn't he just have come upon them shirking their watch, called them on it, and gotten a bit of a beat-down? You get to the same place, story-wise, and if they still wanted to have the awkwardest consummation ever, they could've had it without the nauseating air of gratitude hanging over it.

In summation - this episode I disliked the Sansa/Winterfell story, the Wall scenes (no death-bed wonder-talk from Aegon! I loved his last scenes in the books), and Dorne (both nudity, poison, and cure - all for no reason and in a really short amount of time).

At least the Queen of Thorns was in it, and Cersei's getting hers. Stannis will remain the Mannis if he gets out of this jam without harming his daughter. I hope I can at least trust in this.

And that Tyrion will still be great even while operating across from an extremely pretty plank.

The Gilly stuff was kind of stupid. It just didn't feel like they were going to do another rape so soon, but teasing it the episode after the Sansa thing was probably a bit much anyway. There were other ways to tell us that things are going to hell at the Wall. Also if they had gone with one of those other ways, you wouldn't have had Gilly initiating sex almost immediately after two guys tried to rape her. Which is a little weird.

Also, I'm going to wait patiently for all those people who wrote articles furiously defending the Sansa rape last week on the grounds that it was "going somewhere", to write their apology articles because I think this week's episode made it pretty damn obvious that this isn't helping Sansa develop as a character. Begging Theon for help did not strike me as realistic, and it certainly was not a rewarding place for her character to go. She's basically right back where she was with Joffrey at the start of season 2.

The best stuff this season continues to be the stuff in Kings Landing with the Tyrells (Lady Olenna might be my favourite character on the show), along with the Stannis stuff. Can't wait to see the battle for the North kicking off, and Cersei getting her comeuppance.

Meanwhile, while I'm not exactly optimistic about the Tyrion & Dany pairing, I'm hopeful that he can make her at least a bit interesting for the first time in the story's history. I'm glad that he's there already, because his stuff this season has been a bit blah so far, and her stuff has been blah every season.

Just watched the show, a few quick thoughts.

- Am I the only one a bit miffed that they didn't have Jorah experience being a slaved for at least a week or two? Being that he was banished for being a slaver I felt this could've been a really poignant moment for him. My weekly random prediction is that Jorah will be forgiven by Dany but by the time she's stopped being a bitch (I've never understood why she hates him so much being that he stopped informing on her before she even had dragons) the Greyscale will have been revealed or he'll be defeated in the pits.

- If Lancel had already repented for all his sins why did the High Sparrow not already know about Cersei's incestuous relationship with him? And why did Cersei not see him as a huge time bomb?

- Whilst I'm so happy Bronn didn't die (yet) I can't understand why Tyene performed a striptease before saving him. The Sand Snakes are supposed to be badass, not slutty. Also the poison suddenly kicking in when she asked about Bronn's arm was far too convenient for my liking, did her vagina trigger his nosebleed or what? The whole Dorne sub-plot has been so random but hey, Bronn isn't dead - that's a win people.

- Sansa's asking for help didn't bother me, it makes sense that she'd seek help if Ramsay had been abusing her every night. I didn't like the way the scene was trick-edited to make it seem like Theon was heading to light the candle only to reveal that he'd actually gone straight to Ramsay. It was clumsy in its execution and made it seem like Ramsay was in the tower already waiting for him. I know that's not what happened but the editing in that scene bugged me. I liked Sansa reminding Ramsay that he's still a bastard but her character has taken such a huge step back now nice one liners isnt damage control.

- Brienne got paid for that episode.

- We got another rape teasing scene for no reason other than to give Samwell a nice courageous moment. They seriously couldn't have gone another way to make that happen? Why couldn't they have just had the two brothers call her a wildling bitch and have Sam stick up for her before rising from his beating? Same outcome in the end, it's not so much the rape scenes themselves that piss me off its more that the writers are too fucking welcome to go to that place again and again when there's really no need.

- Arya's storyline is being fast-forwarded but we're not spending as much time with her as I'd like.

It was ridiculously convenient timing, yeah. I wouldn't feel too safe for Bronn just yet, with the whole "most beautiful woman in the world" stuff I'm worried he may get Arys Oakheart'd.

I'm much happier with this episode than I was with last week's. Obviously still unhappy with Sansa's position, but everything else was great. Aemon's death was done well (I'm glad they kept the "Egg, I dreamed I was old" line.") The Dorne stuff didn't suck. Jon not taking Ghost with him to Hardhome doesn't make sense to me though. You'd think he'd want the most protection he could get being among all the wildlings. And, of course, Cersei getting what she deserves was really great to see.

Actually, in a way, it did. She did that to increase his heart rate so the poison would act faster.

Casting for next season
Spoiler:
Confirms Randyll Tarly, Euron Greyjoy, potentially Septon Meribald, Darkstar and a trio of youngsters, two of whom sound a lot like Robert and Ned. Flashback?

They better have Victarion Greyjoy in it too, if they're introducing Euron. Victarion has a lot more to do, at least at first. Euron hasn't done anything yet in the books really. After the ceremony to crown the next king, I don't think he was in it again.

Also, I'm hoping Aeron is in the story at least briefly cos he was my favourite. Damphair for the win.

Spoiler:
I keep wondering what the spoiler scope for this topic is. Is it anything goes or what? I was wondering that to tag that above post with, I aired on the side of caution but we've discussed much more spoilery things without tags than we have using them really. :lol

Anyway, if Meribald and Tarly are there then Brienne's story from Feast might be going down next season. Assuming Jaime comes back from Dorne, maybe @prophet isn't mad after all when he said Stoneheart for the end of season reveal. Meribald might also indicate a certain gravedigger will be showing up, but unless Cersei's storyline slows way down that would mean he'd not be around for Cleganebowl. :P

Also, it took me way too long to realize, I thought @Kirbi had found a way to indicate she was doing show spoilers vs book spoilers or whatever, I didn't figure it literally meant click to show the spoiler. :lol

I thought that given this was a "spoiler chat" we could talk spoilers. Is that not the point? I can go back and put tags around things if you like.

Yeah, I still wouldn't rule out a Stoneheart reveal either, especially if Meribald is coming into play. I mean, she seems to be a far bigger/more memorable part of the story than he is.

Regarding tags, I mean it says "spoiler chat" in the thread title so say whatever you want :lol

I'm not bothered either way, I'm more asking so I can tag stuff in the future or not tag it and feel fine about it. Since it said Season 5 spoiler chat I wondered if it might mean only spoilers for Season 5. It's a bit of a vague instruction. :lol

They finally released the title of the season 5 finale:

"Mother's Mercy"
From HBO: Stannis marches. Dany is surrounded by strangers. Cersei seeks forgiveness. Jon is challenged.
Written by David Benioff & D.B. Weiss; directed by David Nutter.

And if we take a look at the appendix in A Feast for Crows...

LADY STONEHEART, a hooded woman, sometimes called MOTHER MERCY, THE SILENT SISTER, and THE HANGWOMAN

If Lady Stoneheart isn't in the finale, then the show is just straight trolling the readers.

I don't know whether they're deliberately trolling anyone tbh. I think the title is more a reference to Cersei's attempt to seek the Mother's mercy in the eyes of the faith. Episode titles tend to have poignancy for other characters so I'd expect Selyse sacrificing Shireen and some Dany/Dragon action thrown in.

Oh and Jon is challenged is definitely the pink letter, which is how I reckon this season will end. Lmao if it is Stoneheart though and my daft prediction from weeks ago came true.

Holy shit that was amazing.

For the most part this season has been kind of forgettable, but that episode was just fantastic, and not only for the Hardhome bit. The Tyrion/Dany interaction was really well done and it's a reminder of why we've been missing Tyrion in a political role this season. The Cersei build has been great and she killed her scenes. Jorah has been killing his scenes as well lately. Even the Sansa/Theon stuff was great.

But wow, the Hardhome scene was just crushing. I know @Hanley! isn't really a big fan of the whole "Jon and Dany vs. the white walkers" inevitability, but I feel like that scene made the story a WHOLE lot more intriguing, especially the whole bit with Jon's sword. Does that mean that Valyrian Steel is able to take on the Others, or is it Jon himself who has the ability? If so, it pretty much confirms he's one of the three dragon heads.

Also, the Sam line "don't worry, Jon always comes back" basically confirms Jon survives at the end of ADWD, hah. But I mean, Kit Harrington has already signed on for two more seasons, and he's likely going to be stabbed in the finale of this season.
