I think TV Shows have ruined films for me.

I just got finished watching True Detective (incredible fucking show) and I've noticed lately with me, I can't invest into most movies anymore because of the bar set by some TV shows today. Breaking Bad, True Detective, Game of Thrones, House of Cards, etc.

I feel like the investment I had in a character like Walter White cannot be duplicated on a film for me. I feel like TV Shows can give a platform for dynamic characters like that while I just don't share the same emotions for a character in a film.

At times, I feel like the camera work on some TV Shows and cinematography are much better and detailed than most films. I feel like things like foreshadowing, character devolvement, etc. just works so much better on a TV as opposed to films.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy new films here and there but I think if I want great quality storytelling, I'd find it on my television as opposed to my local theater.

Does anyone else agree with the idea that we're in the "Golden Age of Television" as some have dubbed it?

I completely agree. I love or loved every show you mentioned also. You can't beat the time you get to spend watching a great character develop over years. It's an amazing connection/bond that you grow with said character.

And the writing is just getting better and better.

I don't have that problem, I see it this way...

You can not expect a film to gain the emotional attachment and in depth storytelling that a TV series has. If you take a show like breaking bad and adapt it to film with the same actors playing the same rolls you will still lose almost all emotional attachment simply because of the time constraints. Even if you break it down and make a feature length film for every season you will still lose most attachments and storytelling. That's part of what makes those shows so great, it's almost like studio's wanted to make a movie but the creator stepped in and said "why don't we make it a 500 hour long movie, direct it into 1 hour segments and put it on television once a week for years"
