Orange is the New Black

Postby Babes » Jun 09, '14, 9:28 pm

Last year I fell in love with the Netflix's show "Orange is the New Black" and I am excited that it came back for another season. Is anyone else watching it? If so what do you all think?

I like the show a lot. We only started watching it recently, which is cool because we were able to run straight into the second season. We're about five episodes into the second season now, I think. Will probably have it finished within the next week.

The portrayal of the prison seems very realistic and it's really interesting all on its own - seeing what these people do every day. The show really gets across some of the horrors of being in prison too. The loneliness and the danger. It really gets across how helpless the inmates are against the guards. Solitary confinement has never looked as scary to me either. It's really a big difference.

The variety of characters is cool too. Some of them I like a lot more than others. I like Piper still, though I get frustrated with her a lot of the time. The fiance is less likable - even though he's technically a much nicer person, he's still a self-involved douchebag and this comes across in every scene he's in. Some of my favourites are Red, Morello, Nickles, the yoga lady and the guard who's in the band. The counselor Mr Healy is maybe the most compelling thing about the show - the guy is pure sleazy evil. Utterly loathsome.

The main thing I don't like about it is that sometimes I don't like seeing the grosser stuff, but I can look past that for an otherwise entertaining show.

Yes-yes! We binge-watched the first season before our holiday a few weeks ago and we're half-way through season 2 now. It's a really good show, although Piper's less sympathetic so far this season. Larry too; but he was never that sympathetic. :P

Ah - Steve got there first!

Loved the first season and thought the second was very good also. I will say I thought they introduced one too many characters in the second season, which meant they were packing a lot of story in, so much so certain bits and pieces got lost in the shuffle a little bit. Thought it came together really well in the end though. It has a little bit of everything really.

We binge watched the 1st and 2nd seasons back to back to get the full affect of the story together and I found I was disappointed in Pipers character development in the second season. I mean chick tries to exchange a person for a blanket and sees no problem with it and all. I think the forced her character to become dark too quickly- but I know that is supposed to show that prison has changed her. I love the show though to the point that some might say I am borderline obsessed since I follow OITNB on Facebook and Instagram. I even follow most of the cast too.... so yes a bit obsessed.

@Babes while you know my views, I'll share anyway. Wasn't a fan of V. I know you aren't supposed to like her since she is the villain and all but she was almost to evil. There was zero redeeming qualities to her which seemed to oppose every other character on the show. Hell you feel bad for Mendez and Healy, even Pennsatucky from time to time. But V was almost to evil. Hard to get interested in her.

While we are on the topic of new characters to season 2, Soso was annoying but in a good way. I liked the Mrs. Rosa storyline as well. And Susan was great. After seeing her cry with Larry's radio show, never again will I call her crazy eyes. That and her back story really pulls at your heartstrings.
