Movies where you've also read the book?

Postby Matteo » May 06, '14, 6:29 pm

A lot of films are based off books but not too often have most viewers read them. What are some film adapations you've seen where you have also read the book? And which did you prefer? I don't do a ton of non-fiction reading, but I've seen and read 12 Years a Slave, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and some others that I sure am forgetting.

In regards to 12 Years a Slave, the film did an excellent job at capturing both the despair and sheer horror of Solomon Northup's heartbending life. It was very honest to the text and made sure to capture all the important moments. As much as I love the Cuckoo's Nest film, it really left out the surrealist touch of the text and didn't depict some of its more perturbing moments. Then again, I can uderstand why. I'll add more later.

You?

Chronicles of narnia. I prefer the movies because they were extremely accurate and parts were actually better (mainly the battle scenes).

I have seen and read: Hunger Games, Percy Jackson, Divergent, and The Fault in Our Stars. Hunger Games and Divergent were pretty true to form with the books and so I enjoyed both the books and the movies. However,Percy Jackson was HORRIBLE! the books were great but they messed up when it came to the movies. The Fault of Our Stars was a sad but good book and the trailers look like it will be a good movie too.

Read Jurassic Park and The Lost World. Jurassic Park was better as a book, but The Lost World was kind of boring. That one I think worked better as a movie, at they very least it was more fun. Sphere was better as a book, as was Congo. Actually I read everything Crichton wrote and have seen most of the movies. Andromeda Strain was better as a movie (at least the original movie.) Timeline was a much better book. 13th Warrior sucked as a movie, but the book was not great either.

I just read Silver Linings Playbook yesterday. I thought the book was a million times better then the film. Didnt like the film all that much. I read Perks of Being a Wallflower and i think both the film and book are great. I enjoyed the book of Whats Eating Gilbert Grape more then the film. I liked the Wolf of Wall Street film more than the book. Book was still good though. And Eragon is a MUCH better book than film. I hated that movie so much. There's a bunch others but thats what pops in to my head right now.

Harry Potter - Books are better than the films by miles. Although I do like the films, I get frustrated at the important bits they miss out.

I may get ridiculed for this but Twilight - The films are way better than the books which were quite poorly written. Even my OH enjoys the films, mainly because of the wolves :P

Far too many to name. I read a lot and I watch a lot of movies, so I wouldn't even be able to begin to come up with a proper list of titles for this. But here's a few off the top of my head ...

Book is better:
The Beach
Jurassic Park
The Return of the King
Hunger Games
To Kill a Mockingbird
Pride & Prejudice
The Great Gatsby
The Da Vinci Code
Charlotte's Web
Frankenstein
Several Roald Dahl stories
High Fidelity
About a Boy
Harry Potter 1 - 5

Movie is better:
Let the Right One In
The Fellowship of the Ring
The Two Towers
Warm Bodies
Catching Fire
Harry Potter 6 - 8
Coraline
The Wizard of Oz

That's just the tip of the iceberg. If I was to include graphic novels or plays the lists would get longer still.

My next will be The Fault in Our Stars. I loved the book - hope the movie is as powerful. It's coming out here in a month and a half and I'm very eager to see it.

The Cat in the Hat.

The book was miles better as the film didn't seem to take the time to explore the relationships between the kids as good. I also thought that the hat had a fuller character and didn't rely so much on the cat to carry it throughout the film.
