McGregor wins in 13 seconds: satisfying or disappointing?

Postby Messiah » Dec 13, '15, 12:17 am

This is mainly a question for the UFC fans we have here. I'm a casual (and that is using the term loosely; I much prefer boxing and even that I'm very casual for) fan of the UFC and so I knew the hype behind McGregor/Aldo. Hell, you don't even have to care for UFC to know how big of a fight it was.

I know there are a lot of McGregor fans out there and he is great for the UFC. So do you think the satisfaction in McGregor winning and solidifying himself outweighs what I'm sure was a disappointing fight to many? I think that is the main thing that pushes me away from MMA/UFC. I mean obviously they can't help it, but a 13 second main event is, well... just not what I really want to see, especially when it is supposed to be one of the best fights in a long time. I'm glad McGregor won though. I have much more of an incentive to tune in when a guy like him is a fighting than someone else.

I was disappointed in the fight. For how hyped this fight was 13 seconds just didn't cut it at all. Even Dana White looked really disappointed.

It was disappointing. If this was a isolated thing, then I would say it could be good to show dominance, but this has become a trend. I don't need a bunch of rounds, but winning on one punch is just a waste of money and kills any feeling of payoff.

I was hoping for it to go at least a few rounds so they can both showcase their skillsets, but it's a fight, sometimes these things happen. It's not like a wrestling PPV where you're guaranteed a 25 minute main event.

The knockout was perfect, and it was crazy to see Aldo lose that quickly. Shame I couldn't fucking purchase the PPV because it was restricted in the UK.

Not got BT Sport?

I'm glad I didn't stay up tbh. I saw the Aldo/McGregor fight programme was finishing at 7am so glad I headed off to bed earlier than that. But I guess it happens in boxing as well sometimes, not in the big fights, but some main event fights between a rising star and a journeyman end quickly but that's accepted for that situation.

McGregor nailing Aldo when he was out is getting some criticism but imagine it was the heat of battle..

I watched it on BT Sport 2, fucking wish I had just gone to bed considering how bloody short it was.

It kind of sucks, in a way. I mean, I wanted to see more of McGregor. Some mind games, a fight. I wanted to see the aggression from Aldo considering how annoyed he was at McGregor. But you know, it's a fight. He fucked up and he got his ass knocked out for it. Can't help that. Dana should be disappointed in him.

I reckon the fight could have gone a little better for UFC. I mean, they definitely wanted McGregor to win, as he's one of their two biggest cash cows. If he stays winning, they stay making a lot of money. And they definitely wouldn't have wanted to see McGregor lose a fight within the same month as Ronda Rousey.

On the other hand though, the Rousey/Holm rematch could end up doing one of the best UFC buyrates in history, if not the very best. Because Rousey is such a draw, and wasn't completely embarrassed in her loss. I'm not sure McGregor/Aldo would be as big next time around though. Nobody has lost a UFC main event that quickly before, and McGregor is the bigger star of the two anyway. This could really hurt Aldo going forward.

I'm not a big UFC fan anyway though, I only really watch the shows that everyone is talking about beforehand. So maybe I'm way off base here. But it does seem like McGregor/Aldo could have done really big rematch numbers if Aldo had lost after a long, more competitive match.

See I have a different take on that, I think the rematch makes more sense now than it would otherwise. If you can definitively beat a guy over 5 rounds and win, what's the rush to see it again? With Aldo getting knocked out so quickly, even though McGregor deserves credit for it, there it an element of "fluke" factor to it.

There is still an element of, "what if?" Aldo hadn't have been KO'd and the fight went multiple rounds.

I don't see Aldo getting the immediate rematch anyway because Conor is UFC's cash cow now and I don't think Dana White is that high on Aldo anyway with his quiet demeanour and lack of english skills. Edgar probably gets the first shot. That's assuming the rumours of Conor jumping up in weight are false.

I was incredibly underwhelmed. Partly because I was cheering for Aldo and the other part because it did happen so fast. Not going to lie though, it was a well placed strike and he fully deserves to be the champ.

With that being said, Frankie Edgar belongs in the next FW championship bout. I've never been a fan of instant rematches and I hope it doesn't happen. I have my doubts about it being McGregor defending though. After the fights, McGregor's trainer said that him staying at FW will be incredibly unlikely, as the IV has been banned and McGregor has trouble cutting all that weight. Dana has said if McGregor goes up to LW, he gets an instant title match with the winner of Dos Anjos/Cerrone. FW will be more than likely Edgar/Aldo. Which, I'm not exactly thrilled about. Edgar/McGregor has been my go to fight the entire time McGregor has been in the hunt.

Aldo doesn't deserve a rematch. He barely promoted the fight, pulled when it was initially scheduled and was out cold after 13 seconds when they finally faced off. He also completely shat on the Reebok deal (and rightly so) but that also isn't going to help his case with the UFC brass.

Instant rematches should only be given in the event of a split decision or some sort of controversy, not because the loser did some cool things in the past despite losing decisively (Velasquez vs Werdum, Barao vs Dillashaw, Rousey vs Holm, Silva vs Weidman, and many others)

Give Edgar the shot he deserves. If Aldo wants his belt back he can work for it, but he lost fair and square. Edgar deserves the shot and Aldo doesn't, simple as.

Extremely satisfying. I was in a packed out bar in Leeds and the place was electric, watching McGregor walk his talk was absolutely immense. At the end of the day I want to see Conor win, I could care less whether it's a 5 round war or a 13 second KO.

I get why people might be disappointed though if that's the only fight you tuned in to watch. Anyone that watched the whole show should be satisfied IMO, big cards like these often disappoint but we had a jujitsu masterclass from Maia, an extremely close contest between Romero/Jacare and an absolute decimation from Rockhold in the co-main. (not to mention Urijah Faber on the prelims!)

KING CONOR. HE PREDICTS DEEZ TINGS.

Oh and as for his next fight it should absolutely be Frankie Edgar, nobody is more deserving of a title fight. I think it'll depend on the result of the Dos Anjos/Cerrone fight, if Cowboy scores the win you can bet on McGregor/Cowboy at Croke Park.
