Ronda knocks out Correia in 34 seconds, cements her legacy as the GOAT

Postby prophet » Aug 02, '15, 2:43 am

Right? I'm not even worried about spoiler tags because if anybody expected anything less than this you clearly know nothing about MMA. Ronda Rousey is surely now the greatest fighter of all time right? Nobody has ever done what she has done, dominating these women in such brutal fashion. She's untouchable. I welled up when she mentioned Hot Rod and her Dad in the post fight interview.

Dana hinted that he's looking to put Rousey/Tate 3 on the same card as McGregor/Aldo, that PPV would destroy every record easily. Hell, throw Punk's debut on that card and you've got money!

Unpopular opinion time:

Rousey is the greatest female fighter of all time (no question), but I don't think she should ever be recognised as the greatest fighter of all time, men included. The women's bantamweight division is quite easily the worst in the UFC, and a big part of the reason that they can't hang with Rousey isn't just because of Rousey's dominance, it's because her opponents are shit. Women's MMA is still a long, long way off men's MMA, in terms of talent.

If she was destroying women on the talent level of Dominic Cruz, Renan Barao, TJ Dillashaw and other great bantamweights, I'd consider her a pound-for-pound great... but she's not. Skill-wise, the women Rousey has faced in her UFC career (bar Tate, possibly Zingano) wouldn't be ranked in the top 100 if they were men. I'm not even sure some of then would make the top 200 or 300, to be honest.

The real greats of MMA are guys like Anderson Silva, Jon Jones and Jose Aldo, the kingpins of talent-stacked divisions who consistently disposed of the most dangerous fighters in the world like it was nothing. Unless the women's bantamweight division drastically improves and Rousey begins to consistently face some actual talent, I'll always consider her fights a freak-show - she's just being fed opponents who don't stand a chance from the start, because a majority of her opponents just aren't very good.

Holy shit can't believe I'm saying this but I agree with PorkChop 100% on the matter. Not taking away from the woman but there's a lack of perspective present whenever people say she's the greatest fighter ever.

I love Ronda Rousey. She is currently one of my favorite athletes and enjoy watching her fights but @PorkChop is 100% correct on this.

On the flip side of that though, who is to say Rousey wouldn't be dominating if the talent pool was much stronger and deeper? She has all the talent and mentality to do it.

She might well do, it's hypothetical though.

A champion's greatness should be measured by the level of competition they beat, and Rousey has basically been facing amateur-level fighters (bar Tate, possibly Zingano). She's talented, without a doubt, but she doesn't belong with Silva, Jones, Aldo, and the other greats who fought legitimate, dangerous opposition and consistently defeated them.

I know Rousey can only fight who is put in front of her and it's not her fault that women's bantamweight is so weak, but it definitely does affect her claim as being a pound-for-pound great.

Uninformed question: Does anyone ever think that UFC would allow Rousey to fight a male? It would clearly daw massive ratings and would definitely helps her claims as the GOAT.

Absolutely not. The topic comes up every now and then and gets shot down instantly. It would be PR suicide for the UFC.

She'd get murdered and it would be a PR disaster.

No matter what about the quality of opponents, she's creating a heck of a buzz and UFC must be grateful they have here. How other sports would love to have that well-known woman athlete dominating and creating interest.

Vince is probably doing what he can to try and get Rousey involved at Mania 32 somehow (not in a match as doubt Dana will let that happen but as part of a potential Rock/HHH match)
