Not really that surprised, with the huge contracts that A-Rod, Kershaw, & Pujols received when they were free agents/extended. I think Cabrera is certainly the best hitter in baseball and has been for a while. He's 30 right now, so I can see a good chunk of that with him at 1B. Of course he could always be DH. He's played just about 160 games a season since 2004, so injuries have never been an issue. Does he deserve nearly $31M a year? Probably not, but he's definitely the closest player to being "deserving" of that kind of money.

I don't understand these huge extensions for people that will take them into their late 30's or early 40's. Do GM's never learn that these type of long contracts rarely work out for the best. Most of the time the players are barely worth a third of the contract by the time it nears it's end.

The idea is you work out the value of a win in baseball, then multiply that by the amount of wins you expect that player to add over the course of the contract (WAR). Obviously you expect a higher WAR earlier in the contract then later, but the average over the contract should even itself out.

Of course the subjective bit is the amount of wins, the value for the wins and the market value of overpaying a guy to NOT be playing against you.

Good side is that Miggy plays in the AL so can always fall back to DH and has good enough contact that even if he becomes a .300 25 guy, he will still be a great layer to have.

The only issue is if he becomes trade bait because you've removed all but about ten teams who could take him off your hands.

Worth every penny. Also the years aren't so bad. He may finish when he turns 40, but he has been very durable over the years. Also this contract isn't anywhere near that awful Puljols contract where he got 10 years at the age of 35! This is one more reason why I am happy we traded Prince. Now if we can just resign Max Scherzer than we will be set for the next 6-8 years.
