Confirmed: Mayweather v McGregor on August 26th

Postby AkydefGoldberg » Jun 14, '17, 4:13 pm

The fight is official. Mayweather will fight McGregor on 26th August in Las Vegas.

It'll generate massive numbers that's for sure but the fight itself should be one-sided and short for Floyd.

Conor will get the biggest payday he's ever had and be able to walk back into UFC I'd imagine with his reputation not majorly damaged unless he's sparked out within 12 seconds..

No interest. You have (like him or hate him) one of the best P4P boxers ever vs a guy who doesn't throw punches. Should be quick and easy for Money.

It seems that I'm the only one who doesn't think it'll be a quick and easy win for Floyd.

Disclosure: I don't think McGregor will win. It'll most likely be an comfortable and boring UD for Floyd, like a shitter version of the Guerrero fight. It'll be a stinker.

I'm aware that McGregor's not a professional boxer, but people are talking about this fight like it's a prime Mike Tyson against Pee Wee Herman. Floyd hasn't knocked out anyone in years. His last KO was Victor Ortiz about 6 years ago, who was stood in front of him with his hands down looking over at the ref, thinking that the fight had stopped. His last clean KO was against a fat and exhausted Ricky Hatton in 2007. (I say this as a huge Hatton fan).

Floyd is the much older, smaller man. Floyd is 40 now, and is at a massive disadvantage in terms of age, height, weight, reach and power. McGregor is also a southpaw, and Floyd has had issues dealing with southpaws in the past. I highly doubt McGregor will present any problems for Floyd which other southpaws haven't before, but the precedent is there.

Yes, I am aware McGregor is not a boxer. Yes, I have seen footage of him sparring professional boxers where he looks shite. But people are acting like Floyd is some sort of prime and hungry knockout machine whilst McGregor has never thrown a punch in his life.

If Floyd does get the stoppage, it'll be because of McGregor's questionable cardio leading to sloppy decision making in the later rounds. Floyd isn't catching him crisp with a huge knockout punch in the first minute like people at the watercooler are saying.

Anyone who pays for this fight is a bum. This is the Lesnar vs Goldberg WM 20 of combat sports. It's a joke.

Floyd by UD.

I think BT Sport are showing the fight (not sure if it'll be Boxnation who might charge) but I'll be streaming it as it falls nicely on a Bank Holiday weekend.

I'm not knowledgeable on McGregor like others are but many of the debate around him focuses on that sharp, crisp shot that stopped Aldo in 13 seconds but there's much, much more than that to actually box for 12 rounds, with bigger gloves against an undefeated fighter like Floyd. It should be a comprehensive win for Floyd with Conor getting minor offensive in (might be reminiscent of that shit show of a 'fight' of Freddie Flintoff's only professional fight) but Mayweather wins.

Floyd's had a break from boxing before after he beat Hatton in 2007 but he came back in 2009 IIRC and he was younger then. Only hope for Conor is that age has reduced some of his sharpness and reflexes but honestly, Floyd wants to beat him so easily and he'll train even more harder than he does. He knows if he doesn't and it all goes badly wrong he'll never live down losing his 0 to a novice fighter.

Build up should be good viewing but hope both guys act natural and Floyd, knowing Conor's exuberance, doesn't retreat into playing the 'good guy' and being reserved.

I don't know or care enough about either sport to have a good idea of how this might go down. McGregor has knocked more people out in recent years, but would he be able to get that kind of clean shot on an elite boxer, and would his shots necessarily be knockout blows if he had gloves on?

McGregor is younger and has a better reach, is that enough to make a difference?

Because otherwise, on paper this is one of the elite boxers in history against a guy who doesn't even have a particularly impressive winning percentage in his own sport. It sounds like a foregone conclusion.

Is there any precedent to this sort of thing, a boxer versus an MMA guy in a boxing match? As someone who doesn't really follow either sport except for the HUGE matches this intrigues me but makes me think Floyd has a gigantic advantage.

Only one I could come to was Ali facing a Japanese wrestler that he got paid handsomely for but it did him serious damage as the guy was chopping into his legs brutally..

Floyd has the advantage, and rightly so. He should win handsomely which I suppose is what he wants to do, put Conor in his place, make ton of money and go 50-0. But it shows the relaxed attitude in giving someone a boxing licence similiar to the UK when a cricketer got one FFS and had one pro fight that was terrible..

Ali vs Inoki was the first thing I thought of too, but that match ended up being a total farce. Hopefully McGregor vs Mayweather is a better spectacle than that one.

The entire good spectacle of this fight will be before August 26th. McGregor and Mayweather will talk fantastic trash, they will cut some of the best promos on each other leading up to the fight. Then the fight will happen, Mayweather will continue to fight the most boring style anyone has ever seen and McGregor will barely land a hand on him and the fight will suck.

Yup, and everyone involved will make shitload of money which ultimately, is what it's all about. So ignore all the angles given by both camps on why this fight is happening because it's BS.

It also extends to those against it, even De La Hoya if Mayweather was under his promoting umbrella would be championing this if he/Golden Boy would make prodigious boxes of cash out of it.

World Tour of Mayweather v McGregor began today

Press conference was manic, not surprisingly.

McGregor was his usual self, lapping up the audience's cheers (pro-Conor it seemed) and Floyd was animated during his speech and the final face off. A shame they cut Conor's mic off during Floyd's speech.. probably want to let boxing media get clips that are able to broadcast

4 rounds to knock out Mayweather, Conor predicts? If guys who have been boxing most of their lives, putting many rounds in the bank and winning titles, couldn't knock Floyd out in 12 then it's an achievement unimaginable for Conor to do it in 4.

Nah, his mic was cut as the whole conference was rehearsed as fuck and they didn't want McGregor being a wildcard and going off script. If they wanted clips they could broadcast, why didn't they cut off Mayweather when he was swearing like a sailor?

They also probably wanted to save the verbal exchanges until nearer the fight, though muting his mic was a really stupid move. It made the whole conference look rehearsed and unauthentic. Shit event.

Yeah, by its very rehearsed nature was probably in mind to let boxing media get more structured video to broadcast as Conor would have interrupted at regular intervals when Floyd was on the stage. Make it more of a boxing press conference rather than a UFC event.

Reading about Floyd's interviews with the press after the press conference, I was judging his comments as fairly negative about himself but watching him speak, he's playing it very cleverly. He's hyping up McGregor and giving him false security by admitting he's finding training "gruelling", emphasizing the age gap and putting more onus on McGregor.

For anyone wanting something a bit more classic Conor skip to about the 22nd minute mark. Some funny exchanges between him and Floyd Sr.

Terrible excuse. They should just admit that Floyd is running their show and didn't want McGregor interrupting his speech.

Not seen it but apparently Conor was killing Floyd on the mic again, ripping him for his actions at the press conference yesterday and joking about his alleged inability to read (rankles slightly that latter accusation for those who do suffer from dyslexia but hey, that's what you get in this type of boxing build-up)

Yeah it's been cringe. Oh well...it's still cool to see Conor on the back of national newspapers and featured prominently on Sky Sports.
