Wimbledon 2014 Discussion

Don't think many on the site watch tennis like I do, but Wimbledon was officially underway yesterday as Andy Murray started his title defense with an opening win.

I am hoping we get Nadal vs. Federer in the quarter finals. It hasn't seemed to happen recently but I NEED to see these two face off one more time in a match that actually matters.

Nadal's probably not making the semis.

Murray vs Federer is my bet for the final.

Hope Federer wins it this year. Always good to see a legend whose time's fading win a big tournament towards the end of their career.

Well as a 2012 repeat was in fact on the cards at one point, I'm not sure what you're trying to say!

I completely missed this thread...As always at Wimbledon, I hope that Federer can pull it off again but even after some recent good form on grass I don't think I'll be convinced until/if he makes the Quarters and wins convincingly. This being the case I see Djokovic probably as the favourite given that Nadal hasn't made a quality run at Wimbledon for a few years now and Murray has had a hot and cold year with disruptions.

I haven't watched many matches so far but I did see Nick Kyrgios take Gasquet out last night. He is a bit cocky but a promising young talent nonetheless and starting to become a real danger for the mid-range seeds at grand slams, particularly with his serve.

Looking forward to the conclusion of Janowicz v Hewitt tonight. Jerzy is up 7-5 4-4 but Lleyton is certainly still competitive against the younger guys and I wouldn't be surprised if he went on to win if he takes the 2nd set.

Also Cilic v Berdych looks like it could be a quality match.

I meant "nope, Rosol didn't win."

Cilic beats Berdych in 3 and Kvitova takes out Venus in a great match. Both Murray and Djokovic look very solid heading to the semis.

Good win for Dmitrov over Hot Dog in 5. He looked out of it at the end of the 3rd but clawed back to take the final 2 sets. First time in the 4th round for him, a dark horse for me, plays Leonardo Mayer next and then possibly Murray. Looking forward to see how far he can go.

Serena bounced by Cornet in 3 sets.

This is good news for Canada's sweetheart, Genie Bouchard, who now avoids Serena.

Great win for Cornet. I know Serena won two slams last year, but she has been bundled out in the first few rounds of slams a lot recently. She was practically invincible 1-2 years ago and I know she is 32, but maybe it's a sign that the end is closer than we thought?

Yeah, great news for Bouchard who seems to have a knack for avoiding Serena at Grand Slams. She's a very promising player and should be the favourite to get past Cornet but she's definitely in the more difficult side of the draw with possible matches against Sharapova and Halep looming.

I watched some of Kyrgios' win over Vesely last night. A battle of two young guns with big serves and big futures. Great to see Nick get the win in 4, very promising signs for Australian tennis to have a few young guns coming through the ranks as Hewitt is in the twilight of his career. Kyrgios plays Nadal next, given Nadal's form, I'd say that Nick can probably take a set but Rafa will win in 4.

KYRGIOS BEATS NADAL!

Incredible.

Quarters are Djokovic/Cilic, Murray/Dimitrov, Federer/Wawrinka, and Raonic/Kyrgios.

Wow. Nadal out. Rafa play poorly? It seems this Kygrios played outstandingly well that Rafa couldn't cope.

OMGZZZZ THAT SHOT BY KYRGIOS AKSJGHKSDHGKIHG!
https://vine.co/v/MFYKPlIYBMd

Rafa had a poor tournament in truth. The fact he'd been take past 3 sets a number of times didn't bode well for him should he have won today anyway.

Good.

He lost in straight sets - so he can go back to being Scottish now.

Dimitrov seems to be the next big thing in Tennis, apparently he's got Sharapova as his bird aswell so things look rosy for him.

Murray was never going to retain, won his matches easily until today. Probably could have done with challenges in his games.

Hope Federer can do the business!
