What do you have for Christmas Dinner?

Postby Twister » Dec 16, '14, 5:57 pm

I seem to have food on the brain at the moment. I'm not a fan of turkey so this year we're breaking tradition and having Beef done in the slow cooker. Along with roast potatoes, sweet potato mash, Yorkshire puddings, peas, carrots, green beans, cheesy leeks, stuffing, pigs in blankets and of course gravy. I'm keeping it all relatively simple, as there will only be 2 adults and a toddler so we don't really need to go over the top. Plus the fact that I don't really fancy being stuck in the kitchen cooking all day.

What's everyone else having on Christmas day? Do you keep it simple or do you go all out and have all the trimmings?

Some Swedish guy asked me this a while back, what we eat for Christmas over here. I told him that it's traditionally turkey, and he thought that was weird. Turns out for Christmas his family stuff a chicken with bananas and chilli, wait a few days, then eat it.

Like, what.

My family (in Australia) dont do a dinner or lunch. We've always done a massive breakfast - bacon, eggs, sausages, mushrooms, tomato and beer.

We are done by like 11:30, then you can go do your commitments elsewhere (Girlfriends, in-laws etc).

We usually have a traditional Turkey dinner. However, last year, we had Christmas dinner round my sisters how and she made roast beef instead.

Also, my family is Italian. We traditionally eat a lot of fish at Christmas. Usually, Christmas eve my mum will cook a nice big salmon dinner. And Christmas day, she will cook this tiny fishes and batter them. I don't know what fish they are, but they are lovely. Not to fond of the eel though. They freak me out. Imagine coming home from school one day and finding a bunch of live eels swimming around in your sink.

I think I was a little bit sick in my mouth at the thought, chicken stuffed with banana and chilli, seriously? *scratches head*

My family actually has two Christmas meals. We eat brunch at my Mom's parents house with her side of the family. then a few hours later we turn around and have a dinner with my dad's parents with his side of the family.

For brunch we have this delicious french toast casserole with caramel that is out of this world. We also have an egg casserole with peppers, salsa and cheese, bagels from Panera, fresh fruit, sausage and apples.

For dinner we have ham, baked beans, deviled eggs, a broccoli and cauliflower casserole, some other things.

We usually have a few things for dessert at each place as well. I'll probably gain almost 10 pounds on Christmas Day.

My family tends to leave the official Christmas dinner until relatively late (about 18:30). So we have a kind of official Christmas lunch too.

The lunch consists of bread/toast with a selection of cheeses, relishes, smoked salmon, duck pate and that sort of thing. Often opening the presents is left until after this meal ... builds the anticipation!

For Christmas dinner we do turkey and ham, with roast potatoes and stuffing and loads of gravy. Vegetables include turnip, sprouts, carrot and parsnip. For some reason, this is the one meal a year where we'll have soft drinks (Coke/Club Orange) from a can while we eat.

Desserts tend to change a bit, as I don't like a lot of the more Christmassy desserts such as fruit cake or pudding or trifle. But I think I'm going to make some this year. Was planning on a Baileys & Toblerone Cheesecake and maybe some sort of crumble.

We only do dinner. Prime Rib. Everything else is fairly irrelevant but still tasty.

It usually depends on what we all have a taste for. Some years we could opt for the usual turkey dinner, while other times we'll switch to eating ham. Or if we're sick of the whole thing altogether, we'll have a soul food dinner with fried chicken, collard greens, mac and cheese, potato salad, corn bread and mashed potatoes. Desert is usually always sweet potato pie or cheesecake. Sometimes both.

This year we're having the soul food dinner since noone in this house (me included :D) feels like making a turkey and store bought dinners are awful.

My mom usually makes a beef stroganoff that we serve with rice and a vegetable, usually broccoli or something. Then we'll have some sort of baked dessert, like a kringle or a pie. Always a really nice meal that I look forward to. Wash it down with a couple glasses of red wine.

Christmas Eve this year I'll be partaking in my fiancee's annual tradition of getting Chinese takeout. Which seems like a pretty solid tradition to me. Can't go wrong with Chinese.

And Christmas morning we usually have a nice brunch. Fruits, coffee cake, kringle and an egg bake (eggs, ham, onions, bell peppers, mushrooms, cheese).

We are getting a takeaway on Christmas Eve too, I'm thinking KFC this year. Mainly because I can't be bothered with the cooking and washing up afterwards.
