Americans: how do you feel about Black Friday starting on Thanksgiving now?

Postby Everlong » Nov 19, '14, 11:11 pm

The Black Friday sales are pushing back further and further into the holiday. Many major retailers will be opening at 6 PM on Thursday evening now. Others are going to be open all of Thanksgiving Day.

So I guess the question is, how do you feel about this? Do you yourself plan to shop on Thanksgiving? Do these stores being open impact your decision on whether or not you'll do your shopping with them?

I'm a little confused with the rule change.

So what happens on the day after Thanksgiving? Do they all still have a midnight opening on Friday?

I always hated Black Friday after working in retail. I really wish Black Friday would go away because it shows how pathetic humanity can be just to get 40$ off the new TV or game console.

I tried Black Friday shopping once. I didn't like it. I'm just not a fan of being in a big crowd of people. I might try to find some good deals online, but that's about it.

The past few years I've shopped at Target on Thanksgiving evening and it was pretty fun, minus the times where I almost lost my mom among the sea of people. I think this year I'm just going to do my shopping online though.

Personally, I think it's just to cash in on the Christmas shopping hype, but I guess it's cool if you have to work on Friday and you have to miss out on some of those deals. But it's pretty obvious retailers are more concerned about lining their pockets more than anything else.

Do your shopping online if you want deals. Fighting a crowd of people seems ridiculous IMO.

Fuck Black Friday. Making us flock like sheep. I feel less used if I get Cyber Monday deals instead.

I hate it. It's bad enough to do it on Friday, but to now make people who work at these stores give up their Thanksgiving for some stupid deals sucks. I showed the retail industry though. All my Christmas shopping is already done.

I think its pretty lame people willingly spend their holiday and family time amongst a crowd angrily shopping for deals. Kind of takes away from the whole happy holiday off. To each their own, I guess anyone can do what they want in their time. Hell some might even bond over the ordeal, but I don't like that people are forced to work more on the holidays than what was traditional. I don't work retail, but I feel for those who do. I remember my time working christmas eve and day and whatnot, even if its day time and not evening it takes its toll.

It's a bit strange that Thanksgiving is all about appreciating and being grateful of the things you have, and then Black Friday is basically the complete opposite of that - it's about rushing out and getting material things you feel you need.

The two just don't seem to go together.

Well, since I wanted to kill almost everyone in Walmart last night including the employees, I would say it's pure stupidity.

I got my PS4 online. I know I was going to get one eventually but I might as well get it on sale.

That means Thanksgiving should now start on Wednesday night, so it doesn't lose any time. Better start your binge eating the night before next year!

I mean, no one's forcing anyone to go shopping. If you don't want to go, then stay home with your families, or just go on Friday. If it's a working issue, I thought stores were open on Thanksgiving before anyway. I personally enjoy getting good deals on stuff I want to buy, and usually go on Thanksgiving night for the 8PM deals. Not one time did I go and felt like I was in danger at all. Mostly everyone was polite and no one got trampled. This year I didn't go because I was exhausted, but I don't see the big deal if people want to shop on Thanksgiving.

Yeah. It's quite amusing when you think of it like that.

It's like, okay, we've said all what we've need to said. We appreciate you, you appreciate me. RIGHT. LETS GO GET A TV. KICK SEVEN SHADES OF SHIT OUT OF THAT GUY, HE'S GOT OUR NEW KETTLE!

Also, why is it happening here? Look. If we gotta deal with Black Friday - fucking give us the national holiday before and an excuse to make Christmas Dinner again. Otherwise, stick your Black Friday retailers.

I'm not a fan, and I'm not just saying that because I work retail as a 2nd job. I don't think stores should impose deals on shoppers on Thanksgiving, and I don't think people should want to go to the store to save 30 bucks on a cheap tv anyway. I did have to work Thanksgiving, since I work at Kmart and we were open for 42 straight hours (6AM Thanksgiving morning until 12:00 Saturday morning). I didn't really mind it since I had my turkey and stuff with my wife and daughter earlier, and it was only for 4 hours. Would I rather have stayed home? Oh yeah.
