Who inspires you?

Title says it all. Who is someone that inspires you in your life? It could be a parent, friend, celebrity, author, fictional character, etc. Let's hear it!

Ask me a few years back and I'd have said Jon Jones. Now it'd probably be Georges St Pierre.

Of people I know in my own life, I guess my Dad was one of my biggest inspirations growing up. He was a very musical guy, and insanely talented at it. He played a variety of different instruments in a variety of different styles and me and my brothers were always pretty envious of his skill level. We all grew up to be musicians too, and it was always great jamming with him. He'd be willing to listen to anything and play along, even if it was something obscure that he'd never heard of before. He passed away a couple of months ago, so it's kinda nice to think that we're keeping the legacy alive when we play. Even though we may never match his abilities.

The famous musician that I've most tried to emulate is probably Jerry Cantrell. I love Alice in Chains, and the stuff he's done on his own. His way of blending musical styles and his focus on vocal harmonies have always appealed to me. I've never been more starstruck than when I met him after a show a few years ago.

The creative personality that inspired me most has always been Terry Pratchett. He's a wonderful person and an incredible writer and he has such an interesting and open-minded way of looking at the world. He changed the way I think of literature and writing, but also how I see the world in general.

I would say the person I have spent most of my life "inspired" by is my mother. She was a shitty mother who spent my life hating me and abusing me physically and emotionally. I decided at a young age I wanted to be nothing like her. It is because of that goal I have spent years becoming an anti her. So in a way she inspires me to be better.

My grandparents. My nan because she's basically the rock of the entire family, a truly inspirational woman who lives and breathes for all of us. She was a big part of my entire childhood and both grandparents are still a major part of my life. She has helped form who I am today. Always there for us, through thick and thin, always willing to lend a hand and get stuck in and even though she's in her 70's now she refuses to accept that it's okay to take a step back every now and then and that her body simply isn't up to everything it uses to be. If you ask her how old she is and she'll say she's 25! Plus she's hilarious and crazy without even trying to be.

My granddad because he's worked incredibly hard all his life to provide for his family and has missed a lot from his kids and his grand kids' childhoods due to working away. Another reason is because he's currently battling oesophageal cancer. It's been a rocky road and even though the chemo didn't work and the tumour has grown he has been nothing but positive. Not once has he complained about the hand he's been dealt although he would be well within his rights to. I'm so amazed and proud at his strength of character, hopefully he will be getting his operation early September and he can beat this evil disease.
