Can we start negative repping?

If we +rep a post we like, why dp we not -rep those which are poor? (Not just because you disagree with it) I don't think I've seen any post get -repped besides that one guy who's post got nuked into oblivion and while hilarious I think even then it was negated was it not?

It seems like a lot of people are worried about offending others so avoid using it. Can we start using it both ways? Not beginning with my post

If I'm on 50 rep, then get -repped down to say 40 after a string of poor posts for whatever reason, then I'll have to make good posts to get back to 50. So even if people are eventually repped back surely it will be because they earned it?

I mean I don't actually care that much about rep it was just a suggestion haha.

I think it's the kind of thing that can breed bad feelings amongst members. I know because I've been downrepped a few times and I was none too pleased, albeit I'm a rather sensitive soul

Everyone is allowed to have their opinions, if you agree with someone or they present a strong point or argument, you should +rep it, but if you don't, just leave it be, or take issue with it in a separate post. I think encouraging negative repping does just that, makes this place more negative. I don't know about everyone else, but I'd prefer to try and keep this place as fun and positive as possible.

I don't see a reason to down rep unless its absolutely necessary. The rep system is to encourage better conversation, by pushing that we down rep less than ideal posts would just disencourage (is that a word?) Posting because people would not want to be down voted. In fact now that I think about it, the rep system should be more like fb and less like reddit, more of a "like" button than a numerical ranking system

I would avoid it. People would go by emotion instead of what deserves to be negged.

I don't see any harm in negative repping. It's a tight knit community at the moment though, and many members are still treating each other as former allies in the war against WWE-Club so it's understandable that everyone is trying their best to get on with each other and not to rock the boat.

I have negative repped a few people, but not many. My rule is that I won't down vote a post if I have a differing opinion. I only down vote posts if they're overly mean, stupid or trolling. Or if someone has a clearly wrong opinion that others have already proved to be incorrect, but they keep on pretending that it's valid while ignoring everything that has been said to the contrary.

Those posts deserve to be down voted. But I won't punish someone for liking Two and a Half Men, no matter how terrible it is. Those people have suffered enough.

Look at my attempt at a Bad News Barrett troll post. I got down to about -21 or so. After a while my rep went up higher than it was before the post and later on in the thread a bit of an argument broke out on whether or not I deserved the punishment. Realizing that what I had done wasn't funny, I felt stupid but not because I was getting shit on. More because I took a step back & was like, "WTF? Why would I even post something like this???" The topic had to get locked & no one could comment or vote on it anymore. It was controversial IMO.

I agree that comments or topics that are just overly trollish or anything negative or tremendously stupid like mine was deserve to get what's coming to them in terms of -neg rep points.

My rule is that I won't down vote a post if I have a differing opinion.

^^ This. People are entitled to their own opinions so if we disagree on something than at least more possibilities arise for a discussion

Yeah I would never down-rep a post for disagreeing with it, but for the reasons Hanley stated above. I see what everyone is saying about promoting positivity and such though.

And Vince I have never wanted to +rep a post as yours so much in my life but I think I ran out by that point

On a related note, can we get some kind of different notification when we get a negative rep? I had never received a negative rep before today. (Thank you very much SortaCreative.) But imagine how I felt when I received a notification informing me that I have received a point, only to have joy dashed after realizing it was negative.

Ive never downvoted, but I could see myself doing it if a person was on here posting to be an asshole. If someone wants to say shit and start trouble I will downvote them because that is what it is, its their reputation.

Differing opinions is no way to de-rep anyone, I actually enjoy differing opinions because it keeps a conversation going and it is good to see other sides of the coin. If everyone agreed with each other this forum was be pointless.

That being said, sometimes when people act like assholes its kind of funny too....

You can uprep or downrep at your leisure, really. Everyone's going to have different standards for how they choose to dish out rep. Personally I haven't done it much at all, but it's not like I'm opposed to using it or anything like that.
