Why does everyone smoke in Europe?

Postby Everlong » Apr 26, '17, 10:12 am

Every time I come here I'm amazed at the percentage of people who smoke here versus in the states. What's the deal with that?

In England, we smoke as much as possible in hope of an early death, so we don't have to suffer the crippling effects of Brexit.

I have no research to back this up but I think this is really just a cultural thing there. Maybe they think its a part of personality or something.

There are so many cultures in Europe though, arguably more so than any other continent in the world.

I've never understood why people use the terms "You Europeans" or "European culture" or anything else along those lines. It's cropped up a few times on here. In central Europe you can go 100 miles in any direction and you'll find people who don't speak the same language as you, have a different ethnic background to you and have a different religion to you. They'll have different architecture, history, heritage, politics, transport, fashion, music, food, houses, lifestyles, everything.

Europe is a vast melting pot of so many races and cultures, and a majority of countries and their people really aren't much alike at all.

I agree with all of this.

However, basically everywhere I've been in Europe, they smoke significantly more than people do on average in the United States. I wonder why this is.

It's just like their television and other forms of culture. Europe is just the United States, 20 years ago... :P
