Your physical activities whilst at work

Postby AkydefGoldberg » Mar 04, '17, 12:05 pm

During work my physical activity was fairly limited to my desk as I worked and munched away on my crisps and chocolates.

Recently my manager decided to axe our bins for one rubbish depository and I've found it has proved beneficial to walk to put my waste away as previously I had experienced tiredness in my calf muscles. I try to stand up more as well (just need to find a laptop that allows me to work whilst standing!)

I always try to go out for lunch to eat or just a walk round the block.

As I'm primarily office based it's probably expected to feel lethargic at the end of a day but not being active at work and too stationery hasn't helped matters.

I work between two London boroughs, and have to travel between the two a couple of times per week. I usually cycle if the weather is decent as it's often quicker than other forms of transport here, and it's a good way to incorporate exercise into my day. I either cycle or walk to work every morning as well, which is about a mile and a half.

I do spend a lot of time at my desk though, sadly. An email went round a few weeks ago about the availability of standing desks, and I've thought about getting one as they're much better for your body. I'd be the only guy with one in the office though, which would make me look a bit strange.

Since that post, I'm experiencing a slight pain in my lower back since Friday getting off the train.. Hope it's nothing serious.

I work in a CNC machine shop, so half the time I'm programming parts and the other half I'm walking from the machine to my computer testing the program I made and/or running parts. This variety allows me to move around a bit, which makes me feel good. There were a couple weeks where I had to sit at my desk all day staring at a computer screen due to a very difficult and long program I was working on. It was agony. I don't think I could handle a job where I have to sit all day. After a while I could see myself getting used to it... or going insane.

Just digging this up as I've realised recently at work, that I don't take a lunch break. That is, to leave my desk and go out of the building and working in an office environment, it's not ideal.

I was reading an article from a study that showed the hours people have lost by working through their lunch breaks (including eating and working at their desk) rather than utilising their time to take a breather.

My work place is a 10min walk from town and there's the odd occasion I may need something but by time I walk to and from town, there's no actual time to do much but the walk's beneficial.

I was thinking about reading a book during my break but reading it in the office probably isn't conducive but any suggestions appreciated!
