What did you want to be when you grew up?

Postby PorkChop » Mar 04, '17, 4:29 am

I went through a few stages of wanting to be an astronaut, a wrestler, an ice cream man and a chef, but the one that stuck with me was a marine biologist. I fucking loved reading about sharks and other marine animals and knew everything there was to know. For a while I took up scuba diving and really enjoyed it, but it was expensive as hell and after a couple of years I eventually packed it in. I regret it sometimes.

I didn't end up being any of the things I wanted to be. I currently work in transport planning. It's not as fun as headlining WrestleMania or exploring the oceans or the galaxy though.

What did you want to be when you were younger?

When I was really young, I wanted to be a wrestler too. But that dream ended probably around age 8.

For my teenage years, I wanted to be a guitarist in a rock band. I also had the slightly more realistic goal of becoming a primary school teacher. I gave up on both in the end. I love playing music but I realised eventually that I prefer having it as a hobby. I didn't go for the teaching thing in the end because I wasn't sure it would suit me.

I guess I spent a lot of my youth just hoping I'd be involved in something creative when I grew up. Which is still what I want really. I'd love to be able to write for a living. But at the moment, I'm just an Implementation Analyst in an insurance company and I actually really enjoy my job. So things worked out okay.

As football was my passion, reading about it, watching it however sadly, I was rubbish playing it compared to my siblings. I had dreams of being the first British Asian to represent a Premier League club but like I said, my footballing abilities were fairly forgettable, bordering on non-existent.

Then, I went through a phase where I thought of becoming an actor. I excelled it in at school but didn't get the encouragement and direction needed to take it further.

I spent my early teenage and adult years hoping to take my love for football into writing about it. I went through the necessary education routes but I sit here not doing that. I take my own share of the blame, but compared to my contemporaries I haven't got that confident, assertive nature coupled with an out-going personality to do that job in the way it has to be done.

Saying all that, I'm content with my job as I've accepted that won't happen so it's time to move on. Unfortunately, I will always have moments in life thinking 'damn, why didn't I do more with my life?'.

I don't know whether for you guys it's something that you think about in terms of thinking of what could have been or frustration you didn't achieve or try to go for that goal.

I've been thinking about it recently hence the long post!

I wanted to be a garbage man who picked up the trash after the football games at Penn State University. Yeah I was THAT cool!

I'm genuinely surprised that there aren't more British Asians in football, at least at the top level. It'll certainly happen in the future, but the fact that there's hardly any (if any at all) is quite surprising.

I mean, there's Michael Chopra who has Indian parentage, but he's as Geordie as they come. I can't think of any others.

I've written about it regularly on my blog (cheap plug) but I don't see it happening for a very long time.

There's a few Asian players in the Championship and League One and Zesh Rehman played for Fulham in the early 2000s - the passion is there no doubt and fan groups primarily Asian like ones set up in Bradford/Wolves will be helpful in encouraging not only fan attendance to games but to really get involved in a playing capacity.

I never really had a "dream job" as a kid, to be honest, and I still really don't. There were times where I thought it might be cool to cover sports, but even then it wasn't like a "this is what I have to be!" sort of thing.

For the most part in my life I've been pretty "meh" on jobs and careers altogether. That's not to say I'm not driven, just that it's other aspects of my life that account for more of what I'm passionate about.

Back in the day I wanted to be a wrestler. Actually, up until about 3 or 4 years ago lol.

Then I had the dream to be a race car driver and well, I'm 25 and still don't drive so it looks like that's not going to happen either. So yeah...

Everything. I daydream a lot and wanted to be anything and everything that I thought would be cool. I have wanted to be a wrestler, an actor, a singer, a break dancer, a footballer, a stand up comic, an artist,a chef, a writer, a director, etc.

Problem is, I have no talent in any single one of those fields. At least, I don't think I do. I never really ever tried. Who knows what I could have achieved if I just tried more. Maybe if I really was able to figure out what I truly wanted to do, I could have stuck at it and give it a go.

The closest I ever came to trying to do something was doing media studies at collage. I just knew that was a course you had to take to get involved with making movies. And I enjoyed it. To this day I will never know why I never carried on with it. I got offered a full time job where I was working at the time. Full time meant more money. More money meant more partying. In hindsight, it wasn't the smartest decision.

Now, I would like to realistically find something better that I would enjoy, but I still am not too sure what I really want. I have been tying to learn more about computers lately. Maybe that could lead to something. Who knows. In the meantime, an inventory operations controller and a pharmaceutical warehouse is good enough, I guess.

Marine Biologist. Puppeteer for the Jim Henson Company. Theatre Technician. Graphic Designer. Film Editor. Writer.

There were a hundred other things too, but these are the ones that stand out. I had a hard time picking something and committing to it.
