What was the closest thing you've ever encountered to a life threatening situation?

With all the news about Paris and other attacks in Lebanon and elsewhere, I've been thinking about how horrifying a situation like that would be to experience. I've never even come close to anything like that, it's almost impossible to imagine.

What's the closest thing you HAVE encountered to a life threatening experience?

I'm lucky enough to never have been in any kind of situation like that and hopefully I never will. I suppose the only time I have ever been close to death was when I badly cut my arm and suffered huge blood loss. Not sure if that was the kind of thing you were talking about but that's all I've got.

A gang of guys attacked me in Limerick once (the Irish city affectionately known as "Stab City"). I managed to get out of there mostly unscathed, but it was pretty scary for a few minutes there.

It was 2 or 3am and I was walking down some sparsely populated streets and there was a group of 8 to 10 guys tailing me, and occasionally taking shots at me. I don't think they even wanted to mug me, I think they just wanted to kick the crap out of me. I managed to escape onto a main street eventually and they disappeared, but I had taken a few punches to the temple which hurt for a week afterwards.

Closest thing seemed to be nearly getting run over by buses on the walk to college with my mates. It was always at a junction that's fairly busy yet I'd always stroll out without properly looking so had a few close shaves but nothing other than that, fortunately.

I've never really had a situation that became all that real to be threatening, but I'd say the closest I came to feeling threatened was when my family and I was leaving my brother's HS graduation there was a beggar standing on a corner outside the building and usually this isn't a problem, but this particular guy as we walked away from him started shouting things that were combination things of about God and threats of harm. Then he started chasing me, my parents and grand parents like he wanted to start something and at this point we didn't know what he might or might not have, but ultimately nothing came of it.

Have you ever been in a fight and suddenly had you're shirt ripped off by a train?
