What is something that actually offends you?

What is something that actually offends you?

Postby Everlong » Jul 16, '14, 10:53 am

Preferably something that actually personally affects you.

For me, one of my biggest pet peeves is that when people find out that I work from home, the reaction is (fairly often) that they assume it must be a scam, or that I'm lazy, or something along those lines. Fuck that, there are so many people who are constantly wishing that they could work from home, yet they look down on others who actually do it. This is a more common problem with older people -- other people my age are usually jealous or think it's awesome, it's people 10+ years older that seem to take issue with it.

I hate when I'm accused of lying when I am in fact being truthful. Especially when they are basing it on absolutely nothing but their own assumptions. What is even worst is when they don't apologise after being proven wrong.

Apart from that, I really don't get offended easily.

Homophobes and racists. I don't have time for those types and they see nothing wrong with being complete assholes. But almost none of them will at least admit to being a hateful ass clown.

It could just be me but when you see someone in public and they give you a weird face expression of disgust almost. Idk how to explain but yeah it deeply offensive even if I'm just making it up in my head.

Speaking of Muslims, it offends me when people voice their completely ignorant and irrational opinions about them - unfortunately this seems to be fairly common in this country. I don't profess to have a particularly deep knowledge of Islam, but it was the subject of my dissertation and since I've taken an interest in stories about Islam in the press. It seems that no matter what the story is, it'll be met with irrational disapproval from the general public. Honestly, sometimes I feel that a group of Muslims could save a hundred children from a burning orphanage and still get irrational hate for it.

Organisations like the EDL offend me as they just try and promote hatred against Muslims, and many of their followers don't seem to know a thing about the religion. Remember there was that skinhead who kept talking about 'Muslamic law'? There was also a story in the news that Subways in this country were going to serve Halal meat, which people flipped their shit about. Why? It's the same meat, it's just been killed in adherence with Islamic law.

Unfortunately, it seems a significant portion of the general public here seem to be irrationally suspicious of Muslims, and it offends me when they open their mouths and tell me about their ridiculous views. People are dicks.

Casual sexism; or any of the -isms and their ilk, really, but you did specify ones that relate to you.

My personal favourite is when someone asks to be transferred to my male colleague in work for a query - and he transfers them right back in to me after hearing what it is. This only happens on occasion, but it doesn't exactly create goodwill (toward morons).

Well said Porky. :clap

Also regards to Obama when he was pushing for the election in 2008, and people were trying to discredit him by saying he was Muslim and it was like "Yeah, and what IF he was?"

When people see something on social networks and then take it as gospel without actually checking to see if it's true first. There's a group on Facebook called 'Britain First' which is always spreading false and usually racist propaganda, couple of people I know share things off their page every now and then, it's obviously either not true or has been completely sensationalised but of course people don't let things like that get in the way of a good story. It drives me nuts.

It bothers me that someone can't make a comment about Islam or Muslim's without getting hit with the "you must know nothing" or "it's their culture" sticks.

Also speaking of social media, it bothers me when people post quotes on Twitter/Facebook and don't put quotation marks around the quote. Like really, you are not smart enough to come up with that.

People shouldn't bring you down for working harder than them, that's ridiculous. People are so complacent/stagnant nowadays

Re: What is something that actually offends you?

Postby Viazon » Jul 26, '14, 8:12 am

Something happened at work this week that offended me. As I stated before, I don't get offended much easily but I was very annoyed and actually had a bit of an argument with my friend at work. And I really don't argue.

There is this guy at work who some people find hard to like. Mostly, he isn't a bad guy. But he gets very angry easily and argues a lot with people. Because of that, a lot of people don't like him. Now personally, I have no problem with him. I see why a lot of people do, but I have never had any issues with him and we get along just fine. He is a much older man and when I started, I got sent to the department he works in and he had to teach me and show me the ropes. He was the most senior guy in that area. Now, after two years, he is talking about leaving which would make me the most senior guy. So I guess you could say he was sort of my mentor. What he really doesn't like is lazy people, which I am not. I guess that's one of the reasons why he never gets angry with me like he does with other people. Other people have said it's because I am not a really confrontational person and just keep to myself and do my work and perhaps that is true.

Anyway, one day, he got really angry at this other guy who works there to the point where he was screaming and shouting at him. Now, I totally don't agree with him yelling at the guy and he definitely over reacted. But I did understand the reason he was angry with the man in the first place. Even though the way he handled the situation was completely inappropriate.

So, I was talking with my friend about the whole situation and we were discussing why those two were having a disagreement in the first place. As I said, I don't condone the way he reacted but I do see why he was initially upset. And that's what I said to my friend. She, however, disagreed. Which is fair enough. But she kept saying that I am only saying that because I didn't want to anger him. She kept saying that this guy has, in her words, brainwashed me into agreeing with him and that he has taught me to think like he does. This really insulted me because she was basically implying that I am incapable of forming my own opinions and was only in agreement with the guy because had corrupted me in some way. It couldn't possibly be because it's just the way I truly feel.

I have sympathy with you on this type of situation. I think you were right in saying what you believed to be right and am sure your mentor would have appreciated knowing that you were trying to be objective in fighting his corner and being a tad critical of his reaction. I try, at work, to ignore the politics (women politics!) and just focus on my own job and throw a comment or two when necessary but without out fully voicing my opinion. It's too stressful working in my job at times without getting involved in full-blown arguments.
