What's the worst crime that's happened in your city or town?

In the town where I go to uni, a gang of four people have just been given life sentences for one of the most chilling murders I've ever heard. (The following is pretty grim)

They befriended a guy with learning difficulties and manipulated him to get money out of him, which they spent on drugs. Eventually when they ran out of drug money, they kidnapped him and held him hostage, beating him with a baseball bat and threatening to kill him. He didn't have any more money to give them so there was nothing he could do. After about 5 days of constant beatings and taking photos of him cleaning his own blood up off the floor, this gang realised that if they let him go, he'd go to the police. So they decided to kill him by repeatedly stabbing him in the neck, then putting his body in a bin and setting fire to it. Immediately afterward doing so, they went to a rave in a neighbouring city.

They all plead not guilty in their trial, too. Ugh.

A couple months ago a guy was murdered in the building next to me. It was the first murder in my suburb for nearly 30 years. Kind of surreal, I woke up that morning and it was all taped off and I had no idea what was happening, then wound up turning on the news that evening and there was a live feed of the building.

I'm currently living in Dublin - the capital city of Ireland. So I have no idea. Lots of crimes will have taken place here. Hard to pick out just one.

But I come from a small Irish town originally. And there was one murder there a few years back - the first in decades, at least. It's not the kind of town where that stuff happens. But basically a traveler killed his father. Beat him to death with a hurley, I think. Rumours were circulating that the father had been abusive and the guy just had enough one day. I think he was in his 20s at the time.

Very surreal week in our town for sure.

I should also mention that I grew up in the town adjacent to where the Sikh Temple shooting happened last summer. That was nuts, to see that the shooter was from my hometown. It was all over the national news for days at a time. Crazy how you still hear about Newtown all the time, but never anything about that temple shooting.

Where I grew up for my childhood into pre-teen and early teen years, there were numerous murders and robberies. A specific one that's always been stuck in my head was when I was 13, an 8-year old girl was raped and shot in the head. So that's rather gruesome. It was, and still isn't, a safe area. Although it has improved.

Where I grew up in my later teen years, I'm pretty positive the biggest crime must've been jaywalking.

Where I live now, there was a robbery at a local convience store a few years back. That's about it.

There have been a fair few murders in my town.

There was this one story a while back about two guys who got into an argument in a pub. One guy attacked him with a machete. He then tried to run away and he chased him down the street, hacking away at him. That was pretty big news.

One of the ones I am more familiar with was a murder of a man which was taken hands of two guys who went to my school. They had supposedly used wrestling moves on the guy, one of which was the Peoples Elbow. Apparently, they had put a wooden pallet on his head and jump on it. That was way over ten years ago. I believe they were 15 or 16 at the time. Couldn't have been any older than 17. They have only just recently been released in jail. They got caught because after they did it, they went and bragged about it to their friends and someone told. I never trusted one of those guys. Always thought he was weird. His brother was a thug too. My mum still knows their mum. In fact, she had her around our house the other day for tea.

The only thing I can remember was a few years back, You have to take into account that parts of Belfast are highly sectarian, but my mum works in a place where the population of that area is majorly unionist/protestant, and one night a group of them went into a catholic/republican area and basically for no reason at all kicked the living shit out of him and took him back to their own estate and crucified him to a fence to make an example of him and to send a message.

Probably the most sickening thing I have ever had to read about.

A few weeks ago I was in bed and my brother called me (he lives in my attic) and asked if he was able to come home. I asked what the hell he was talking about, and he told me to look outside. Outside there is literally like 50 SWAT team members running down my street with huge assault rifles. The house was 5 houses down from mine, and some of the cops even set up a post in my driveway. Turns out there was a guy keeping his girlfriend hostage with a gun. After a 10-12 hour standoff, they send a robot in and found that he had hung himself through the night and his girlfriend ended up being dead before they got there in the first place.

There was a huge meth bust about 10 minutes from my house a year or two ago, biggest in New York state history i believe. Also, a couple years back a woman was killed by her father and then the father show himself right outside of the train station. I was in school but my mom saw it all happen. Crazy shit.

There have been countless murders, home invasions, rape, drug sales, kidnapping, abduction, etc..
The sad thing is that its a small town with under 100k people but with the constant influence from our southern neighbors it feels like a major city (crime wise)
