I'm guessing there's a few different things at play with the RG III situation. First, I think it's just making a declarative statement that they are done with him and moving on, so they are sitting him while trying to work a trade so as to not lower his value by playing worse. Second, I'm sure they don't want to see him getting hurt and being on the hook for 15 mil or whatever it is next season against the cap because it's guaranteed money. Third, we don't get to see what happens in practice throughout the week. I'm sure there's a good chance, that Cousins is the harder working, more prepared and better ready to execute the game plan from a mental standpoint of the two QB's. Quarterbacks are so pampered in that nobody wants to see the declared starter pushed or threatened in any way and I'm sure most of the other guys in the locker room get tired of seeing it with a QB that gives no reward for that commitment back to the team with preparation and execution - not to mention throwing teammates under the bus which RGIII has done numerous times. Fourth, I'm sure there's an inkling of a thought in Gruden's mind that if I'm going down either way I'm going to go down my way.
Ultimately, it's said so often that it's become horrible cliche, but there's no intentional tanking in the NFL like in the NBA. There's not a lot of long term vision once a franchise gets into the season. Coaches are making a whole lot of decisions that they believe give them the best chance to win. It's just that when it comes to the decision of which QB they should play this Sunday, two-thirds of the coaches in the league are making that choice from only losing options.
