NFL PLAYOFFS - Conference Championship Picks!

Postby Everlong » Jan 14, '14, 11:19 am

Ok, so for this week the point totals go up to 5 for a correct pick and 10 for a correct upset. Here we go!

GAME OF THE WEEK - New England Patriots (13-4) at Denver Broncos (14-3), SUNDAY at 3:00 ET, DEN by 4.5 - Does it get any better than Manning vs. Brady to determine which team goes to a Super Bowl? It really doesn't. And to be honest, I have no idea who to pick here. The Patriots already beat the Broncos in Denver once this year, but the Broncos defense came out last week looking the best they have all season against San Diego. Of course, the Patriots provide an even stiffer test. Will the Broncos be able to handle Tom Brady? Really tough to say. But I know one thing - before the playoffs even began I predicted the Patriots would go to the Super Bowl, and I'm not about to back down from that prediction. Can't wait to watch this game. UPSET! - Patriots 33, Broncos 30

San Francisco 49ers (14-4) at Seattle Seahawks (14-3), SUNDAY at 6:30 PM ET, SEA by 3.5 - This rivalry has been pretty consistent the last couple years... the 49ers squeak out a win at home, then travel to Seattle and get absolutely dominated. While the Seahawks probably won't blow out the 49ers this time with so much on the line, is there really any reason to think that they've suddenly lost their edge over San Francisco? It's really difficult. When there are so many things that are even between these two teams, quarterback play is going to be the edge here, and Russell Wilson is a significantly better player than Colin Kaepernick. I think the Niners will give it all they've got, but the Seahawks and their homefield advantage will be too much to overcome. Seahawks 24, 49ers 20

SUPER BOWL XLVIII: New England Patriots vs. Seattle Seahawks, aka the HFX Bowl. Get ready :cheers2

GAME OF THE WEEK - New England Patriots (13-4) at Denver Broncos (14-3), SUNDAY at 3:00 ET, DEN by 4.5 - Manning vs Brady Bowl v. 1,000,000 and this one has every of living up to all of the others as the best two teams in the AFC all year long battle to go to the playoffs. The two QB's are pretty much a wash and I think the defenses as they are constituted right now (i.e. New England beat up) are pretty equal. Where I think this game will be decided is the weapons both quarterbacks have to work with. If Blount can roll through Denver like he did Indy the Patriots will go to the Super Bowl, but I'm not sure he will. I don't think New England has the personnel to guard all of Denver's weapons and that will ultimately decide it. Manning gets a lot of flack for not winning a lot of Super Bowls, well Denver's used to that. The team president there couldn't win the big one either until the twilight of his career, I see history repeating itself this year with Manning playing the role of Elway, I wouldn't even be surprised for Peyton to retire this off-season on top after winning his second ring. Denver Broncos 31, NE Patriots 28

San Francisco 49ers (14-4) at Seattle Seahawks (14-3), SUNDAY at 6:30 PM ET, SEA by 3.5 - All season long a lot has been made of Seattle's home field advantage and the streak of wins they have going there, with a minor interruption by Arizona, but I've said all along that I had a feeling they would lose a home playoff game this year. Well there's another streak that is now backing up my theory. In seven of the last eight years a team that played on wild card weekend has made it to the Super Bowl, well the Niners are the only team left with that qualification and at some point a streak just turns into a fact of lift. UPSET!!! SF Niners 21, Seattle Seahawks 16

I'd be extremely surprised if Peyton retires, even if he does win a ring. He just had his best statistical season. Guys like Manning are addicted to success... I don't think it'd be that easy for him to hang it up quite yet, not if he feels he's at all capable of continuing to play well.

It could be, but there's a couple things to remember. First, he's 37 years old. Second, he's got a bad neck that he has a mandatory checkup every year (per Chris Mortensen) to make sure there isn't new or different damage to, if they find something in an off-season it's likely Manning is done immediately. The third, I didn't realize the contract he signed with the Broncos was for 5 years, I figured it was a three or four year deal that would only a year or two left.

I'm still not sure he won't decide to go out on top though because for a guy that wants a grand legacy that seems like his best bet to me.

New England 38, Denver 31 UPSET!!!! - This one is definitely tough but I got a good feeling about this Patriots' team so...that's about the extent of my reasoning. :lol

Seattle 20, San Francisco 17 - Defensive slugfest and while I think the 49ers are a great team (whom I hate) I think Seattle (whom I also hate) has their number at home. Going with the safe bet.

Looking forward to these games, should be a great Sunday.
