OK, so Josh McCown entered today's game with an undisclosed shoulder injury and rib injury. The shoulder was probably a separated shoulder. Right around halftime, McCown took another severe shot to his throwing shoulder. He was rendered useless. He couldn't throw the ball straight 5 yards and after a few more hits to the shoulder it got so bad that McCown dropped the ball in the pocket for a fumble, just had no strength in his hand to hold the ball.
He played like that for most of the second half and the Browns refused to put Manziel in until right around the two minute warning. OK, so I'm going to skip over the debate about whether Manziel would have given the Browns a better chance to win the game than Manziel at that point.
Here's my real question. If a team has a healthy backup quarterback that they have so little faith in that they'd rather play the starting quarterback even when he's so injured that he can't throw the ball or even hold onto the ball, why do you have that backup quarterback on your roster at all? I mean isn't that the definition of a useless player on your roster?
