Does Denver have the balls to bench Peyton Manning?

Postby Messiah » Sep 17, '15, 7:35 pm

Someone of Manning calibers being benched would be unheard of. I mean, we have seen Hall of Famers take sort of a backup/situational role in the past but I can't think of someone who was quite as good or near Manning's level/status get benched during the season.

So do you think Kubiak would do it? Lets face it, Manning is done. Denver isn't going anywhere with him and I think their team is too good to just sit and accept it. Do you think they would see what they have in Osweiler?

After two weeks, Peyton is PFF's lowest-rated QB.

With as stacked as Denver is around the other positions though, all Peyton has to do is play "ok" and the Broncos could still go pretty far. But he'll have to play better to get past New England. Tom Brady is playing out of his mind right now. Cincinnati is also looking pretty impressive in the AFC but we all know they fall apart as soon as it turns to January.

Yeah, Peyton can definitely make the Broncos win the west, but if they hope to get past the Patriots or Steelers they will have to do something drastically better than what they've shown so far.

So maybe it is time to revisit this...

Denver has an All-Star team, but I don't think Manning is good enough to capitalize on it. I can't imagine how much worse he is going to look once December hits. Broncos might not have a lot of faith in Osweiler (neither do I), but it seems worth seeing what he has to offer and I think he at least would be a much better fit in Kubiak's offense (reminiscent of Flacco last year) than Manning is. This team isn't going anywhere with Peyton.

Unfortunately, I don't think they have guts to do it. Manning is too much of a legend and I'm sure they are still hoping he will turn it around.

Here's the problems with benching Peyton Manning right now. First, they don't have a better option. I think Osweiler will in fact be noticeably worse than Manning is even playing right now. Second, I think trying to transition the Broncos to Osweiler and a true form of the Kubiak offense won't be accomplishable in the middle of the season. That's a whole lot of change that you are asking the other players on offense to go through and I think they are all more comfortable playing in the Peyton offense right now. You need to be able to run the ball in Kubiak's offense, Denver's o-line is still trash at running the football which won't be fixed by putting Osweiler in and allowing defenses to focus on the box even more. Finally, while Manning isn't continuously dominant like he once was in this offense, he's still a crafty veteran who has a knack for making plays at the end of close games to win them late like he did yesterday and like he's done every week this season to be undefeated.

Can the Broncos make the playoffs with Manning playing how he is? Yes. Can they make the playoffs with Osweiler? I don't know. Can they win the Super Bowl with Manning? No, but they can't win the Super Bowl with Osweiler right now either. Manning still gives them the best most secure chance of going as far as they can. I'm a Browns fan, I get that the backup quarterback is the most popular player on an offense that's struggling. That's right up until the backup comes in, and then most people gasp and then say, "oh that's why he was the backup!"

I gotta say though, this has been one of the most interesting storylines in the sports world of in a long time. Manning is like that guy we see in movies or in stories, that guy who is trying to do all he can to show he can do it one more time. He's the underdog. It almost makes me want to root for him.

Deion Sanders said it best. Right now the Broncos are betting on a first-round bye and praying Peyton can show up for 2 games to get them to the Super Bowl and anything can happen then.

Oh I totally agree with you, it's fascinating. And like I said previously, I don't think he can get it done. In January with a bye or not, Denver is really in trouble against the Pats, Pittsburgh and maybe even Cincinnati depending on what happens with them as the year progresses.
