Sohonestly, Jordy Nelson is a top 5 WR, right?

Postby Philip Rivers » Dec 01, '14, 11:59 am

If he was black, they'd be saying he's top 5 since 2011.

For sure TOP 10 no doubt.

People were telling me on another forum before this season started that Jordy was the third best receiver in the NFC North behind Megatron and Marshall, and maybe even fourth behind Jeffrey.

IMO this season Jordy has proven himself to be minimum top five, maybe top three. I'd take Megatron over him still even though he's had a down year for sure. But there aren't a whole lot more guys in Jordy's league right now. He's unbelievable.

I don't know that I'd call him top 5 right now. I mean there's so many great receivers in this league right now that it gets hard to distinguish between guys right now. But I think my top 5 would probably be...

1. Megatron
2. Josh Gordon
3. Dez Bryant
4. AJ Green
5. Antonio Brown

Nelson would fall into the next group of 5 though. I also think it's hard to measure him against some guys purely because I think playing receiver is so much easier when you are working with a top 4 elite QB like Jordy is.

I have him in my top 5 WRs. If he's not in someones top 5 then he has to be in their top 10.

1) Calvin Johnson
2) Dez Bryant
3) Demaryius Thomas
4) Antonio Brown
5) Jordy Nelson

6) Josh Gordon
7) AJ Green
8) Julio Jones
9) Alshon Jeffery
10) Brandon Marshall

I'd definitely take Jordy over Demaryius and Antonio Brown. Probably over Gordon too--the guy's a one year phenom at this point and has more to prove. The only people I'd consider putting higher than him are Megatron, Bryant, AJ Green.

Also @DBSoT you'd take Tate over Cobb?!

Tate is a #1 on most teams. Cobb is a #2 on those same teams. Look at the drop off in Seattle without him, even before Harvin was traded. When CJ was injured Tate carried the Lions offense. I don't want to take away from Cobb though because he would be #6 on that list.

Josh Gordon has played two full seasons in the NFL after yesterday (his 32nd career game). Through that time frame he has averaged 83 yards per game. Jordy currently is averaging 56 yards per game on his career. He's also on pace to have just as many TD's in the same period as Jordy.

And I hate to point this out again, but Gordon has done all that with Brandon Weeden, Jason Campbell and Brian Hoyer throwing him passes. Jordy has had Rodgers throwing him passes.

Jordy Nelson killed it without Rodgers last year too. Gordon is an idiot.

I'd take Jordy 1000000 times over, for multiple reasons including IQ and character. Lets not act like Gordon is far better at what he does, he isn't.

Jordy >>>>>>

I mean you think he's better than Dez too?!

This is misleading. Jordy didn't start getting starter reps until late 2010. He was basically a starter beginning in 2011. So for a reasonable comparison you'd have to compare stats since then, in which case the stats are much closer.

And in any case, I'm taking the guy with four years of pro bowl level play over the guy with one season of pro bowl level play. He's more proven.

You could say he's more proven. I could say he's already hit his ceiling. Also, Gordon didn't start getting a starter's level of targets either until nearly the end of his rookie year.

I mean I guess you could, but that'd be ridiculous because a) there's no statistical way to back that up, especially when you consider he's on pace for another career year and b) even if he has hit his ceiling, he's still proven himself better than Gordon has. That's without even considering that Gordon will probably get himself suspended for a full season at some point.

If Jordy Nelson got the same amount of targets and receptions as the likes of Josh Gordon, Megatron, Antonio Brown, etc then he'd have near double his numbers, he's had 70 (112 targets) catches this year for 10 touchdowns and 1119 yards compared to Brown - 96 catches (135 targets) for 1258 yards, Thomas - 88 catches (137 targets) for 1255 yards, Megatron (missed 4 games) - 49 catches (90 targets) for 724 yards & Gordon (played 2 games) - 15 catches (29 targets (avg 14.5 targets per game... if he had played all 13 games he'd have 188 catches based on the average) ) for 195 yards.

^^^ If Nelson matched A. Brown in number of targets he'd have to catch every single one of them to get in his neighborhood of catches.

It doesn't work that way.

That is akin to saying if Darren Sproles had the same amount of carries this season as say LeSean McCoy has had to this point, he would have near 1600 rushing yards (145 YPG). Or staying with receivers, DeSean Jackson would blow Jordy Nelson's numbers out the water if he got Nelson's amount of targets (Jackson has 942 yards on 78 targets to Nelson's 1119 yards on 112 targets). You simply cannot extrapolate NFL numbers like. It just doesn't work. There are far too many factors to consider.

Jordy Nelson is an excellent receiver who makes a lot of difficult catches, runs precise routes, and has a knack for the big play - he is faster than people give him credit for. I think he has an argument for the top five, certainly.

Some of you are underrating Josh Gordon. He has proven 2013 wasn't a fluke season and it isn't like he wasn't productive as a rookie either - 800+ yards and 5 TDs in limited playing time (at first) with Brandon Weeden at QB. I have no problem if you think Nelson is a better receiver (I disagree) but it shouldn't be because he's more "proven". I don't know what more Gordon would have to do to prove he's the real deal. He's a great player.

It is hard to have a definitive list because all these top receivers have some pluses and minuses to them (some minor, some a little major). So I can't say with 100% certainty who I would take over Nelson. But here are the receivers I would probably place over him:

Calvin Johnson
A.J. Green
Josh Gordon
Antonio Brown
Julio Jones
Dez Bryant
Demaryius Thomas

I don't see anything for Nelson over Johnson or Green, truthfully. I love Demaryius Thomas and think it is a shame some people see him as nothing more than a receiver that benefits from Peyton Manning. He's exciting to watch and a physical specimen (it is the main reason he went in the first round to begin with). But I get why some would prefer Nelson.

Julio Jones is the interesting one. I think he is amazing. If you watch Falcons games, you'll see Matt Ryan underthrow the hell out of him constantly. He did it against Carolina and did it plenty in the second half against Cleveland. It's a shame. In spite of that though, his numbers are still great. But like I said, with a lot of these guys, it comes down to just a coin flip. Bryant does some things better than Nelson and Nelson does some things better than Bryant (consistency play to play).
