Euro 2016

Postby AkydefGoldberg » May 29, '16, 3:19 pm

Now the season is wrapped up with the CL final. All attention turns to the Euros.

I'm going for France as the hosts to win. The players they've left out could easily walk into England's team who will reach the quarters.

Hoping for a good, incident free tournament to keep us occupied in the summer.

Wales v England will be during the day so in some work places might be tricky to get to watch it but it's being advocated to allow flexibility. Probably will be keeping up to date with on Twitter when at work.

Ah Roy Hodgson - last game before the Euros and he's experimenting a 4-3-3 with Vardy/Kane out wide, Rooney at the tip of the diamond and just saw a stat that Vardy had scored in his last three England games before tonight and Rooney wasn't playing in any of them..

Rooney shouldn't be anywhere near the starting 11. He's not exactly be in form for the past two seasons now, and he has never performed well in tournaments.

In our office pool, I pulled the following two teams:

Italy
Poland

I think that's a pretty good draw? But I don't keep up with football at all, so I could be wrong.

Everybody gets a team from the top 16 and a team from the bottom 16. I'm pretty sure that Poland aren't that low in terms of the bottom 16? And Italy used to win lots of the football. Do they still win lots of the football?

It's really crazy how much things have changed since 2012, when Spain was looking like the greatest team the world had ever seen and now they're not really one of the prime contenders.

Italy were good at the football, and won the football's biggest tournament, the World Cup, in 2006. They also finished as runners-up in the last Euros.

Now they're only okay at the football. They've got one of the oldest squads in the tournament and many of their players are pushing 30, or are the wrong side of it. They have some great players in the squad, but they've got a fair few pretty average ones as well.

They're in a group with Belgium, Sweden and Ireland. Belgium and Italy are favourites to make it through, but if Sweden managed to sneak in ahead of Italy it wouldn't be a groundbreaking moment or anything.

If they were a wrestler, they'd be: Chris Jericho. They've been main event players in the past and have won a couple of major things, but they're getting on a bit now and will probably be used to put other talent over as the tournament heats up.

As for Poland, they've got an absolutely lethal striker in Robert Lewandowski. Aside from that, eh...

If they were a wrestler, they'd be: Evan Bourne. They're kind of irrelevant and nobody really expects them to accomplish anything, but they've got one trick (Shooting Star Press / Robert Lewandowski) which could see them defy expectations (until they're comfortably disposed of).

Hoping that Roy has learned from the disastrous experiment against Portugal. Why he thought playing Vardy and Kane out wide would be a good idea I don't know.

Alli needs to be playing number 10 or we don't perform; simple as that. Drop Rooney deeper if you must start him but don't play him in behind the striker or we're fucked.
