What does it mean for a player to be on loan?

So I'm playing a FIFA career and I started off wtih Arsenal, but now I'm on loan with Sheffield United.

What does that mean in real life? Arsenal still holds the contract, but they let you play with someone else? Can they call you back up at any time? How does that all work?

Arsenal may have some young promising players in their team. They aren't ready to play for Arsenal yet, but they don't want them just doing nothing all the time. They want them to get some playing experience and hopefully, when they get older, they will be good enough and ready to play for Arsenal.

That's where a loan signing comes in handy. A lower league team may loan the player from Arsenal. This player is still an Arsenal player but they are letting him play for this other team to help him get some first team playing experience.

This comes in handy for lower league sides who may not have much money to be able to have some quality players in their team. They usually don't have to pay any fee to Arsenal to have the player and the club loaning out the player will usually always still pay for the players wages.

As far as being called back, it depends. Sometimes they put a clause in the contract that the player can be called back to Arsenal whenever they want. For example, if a few Arsenal players get injured, they may need that player. So they will bring him back.

Ok, that makes sense. So how do they choose which taem they're going to loan the player to? Are they in any way affiliated with these lower level teams (like how baseball teams in the US major leagues have minor league affiliates)?

Usually all big teams have a feeder club they are associated with. If a team like Arsenal decide they want to loan a player out, they will make it known to other teams. However, their feeder club will get first dibs. If they don't want him, they will offer him to other clubs. If any team would like to sign this player on loan, they will let Arsenal know. After that, it is down to the player to decide which team he would like to go for, assuming that more than one team has asked for his services.

Of course, there are a lot of various other reasons why a player may be loaned out. It isn't just for the youngsters getting first team experience. However, that is the main one.
