Steven Gerrard is leaving Liverpool

Postby PorkChop » Jan 01, '15, 5:17 pm

Just announced on MOTD. He's going to see out his contract and leave the club.

He'll probably go to the MLS, which is a pretty smart move. It's a much slower league and Gerrard has shown this season that he doesn't have the legs for the Premier League anymore. He'd be a good signing for an MLS team.

Isn't that the same reason Lampard left for the MLS, but ended up coming back to the Premier League anyway.

In any case, good luck to him in whatever he does next.

By the sounds of things, Gerrard doesn't want to play for any other English team (probably as he'd get kneecapped by gangsters like he almost was in 2005) and to be honest, I doubt any good English teams would want him at this stage in his career.

Now obviously Gerrard can do what he wants. But another good option for him would to maybe except the fact that he is no longer a first team starter and could at best be used as a back-up. And perhaps lend his knowledge to players coming up through the ranks.

Or just make a shitload of money being a big fish in a small pond, soaking up the sun in the US. I know what I'd rather do.

LA Galaxy & New York both have DP slots open after Henry & LD retired so they'll be the most likely clubs, Red Bulls have the most cap space out of the two but the lure of a LA home would be the more favourable to Gerrard.

The other option is Orlando, but are already spending $7,167,500 on Kaka alone and they have 2 DP's already but would most likely be granted the 3rd and I also don't think he'll end up at NYCFC because Lampard will end up there when his deal at City ends at the end of the season.

LOL at talk of him being a one man club on the day he says he's off.

But inevitable - hangover from last season, straight into an awful WC individually and collectively, a short holiday, pre-season, Liverpool's form faltering, no big signings, Rodgers dropping him for the Bernabeu - plus no real determination to get him on a new deal by Liverpool.

He'll be off to LA Galaxy. Shame, would have liked to see how he'd still perform at a big club in Spain/Italy.

I do feel sorry for him about his infamous slip. It's funny to laugh, but you can tell it really affected him. He was immense last season and now looks like a shadow of his former self, aside from moments of excellence here and there. The fact that it was a major factor in costing Liverpool the title is bound to torment him, and it's quite sad that it's become somewhat of a career-defining moment for him.

Gutted. He's not a first-team starter anymore and despite his two goals against Leicester the reason Liverpool bottled that game was due to the fact both he and Lucas were sat in the middle of the park. It's a bittersweet feeling because like Porky said he's probably tormented by what happened at the end of last season and fancies escaping England for a while and he's more than earned the right to go and enjoy himself in America so in that sense I'm chuffed for him but he's still a quality footballer and could offer so much coming on from the bench similar to how impressive Lampard has been for Citeh this season. Were it up to me I'd be itching to keep hold of him but as I said he's probably wanting a change and there's nothing Rodgers could do to keep him.

Why has he announced this so early though? It's hardly going to have a positive effect on the team is it? Can't help but feel he should have waited until later in the season to announce this rather than make every remaining game this season be somewhat of a testimonial.

He said he wanted to announce it now so speculation about his future wouldn't affect the team.

Fair enough. I don't think speculation on his future would affect the team half as much as him announcing his impending departure would - speculation is speculation, concrete news will have gutted a lot of his team-mates not to mention the fans, we shall see!

announcing things could have a good effect on positive momentum. i.e Ray Lewis with Ravens before their first playoff game when they went on to win the super bowl that year.

but im sad too. it sucks he cant redeem himself for the mistake that happens at times. maybe he takes time away and comes back.

America will suit him, allow him to play similiar to how he played last season in the deeper role but also get forward and score goals. But Lampard has shown he's been able to continue his longevity better than Gerrard. Latter's Roy of the Roverts stuff has taken a hit on his body whilst Frank's been able to stay in nick physically.

Just imagine if Jamie Carragher had gone to America instead of Gerrard? They'd have to get the subtitles at the ready!

I thought NYC might have paid top dollar to get Gerrard and tell Lampard to fuck off in light of him staying until the end of the season because as with Beckham, the American soccer fans get arsey when their foreign players, realise that they miss European football and would prefer to play there.
