In the Premier League, if you pick up 5 yellow over the season cards you receive a ban, usually only for one match. I'm not sure about the rules for other leagues though.

In the World Cup if you pick up two yellows in as many games, between the group stages and quarter finals (which has happen to RVP), you're made to serve a one match ban. Two yellows in the same game will give you a one match ban as well, as will a straight red, though depending on what the red card was for, it may extend beyond one match.
