What should United do with Rooney?

I say give him one more season and then move him on.

He's on £300,000 per week, his best days are behind him and they have much better alternatives, both up front and in midfield. His legs went a few years ago and his form has never really recovered since. He was in his peak around 2008-2012 and after that has been progressively more disappointing each season.

He doesn't seem to play with the aggression he had when he was a bit younger either, and that was a huge part of what made him so successful. It seems he's physically and mentally diminished as a player over the past few seasons. He's played about 40 games a season since he was 16 though, so I'm not surprised he's winding down a few years earlier than most other forwards in his age group.

He's still got a couple of years left in him, but I don't think they should be at United. He just doesn't seem to fit there anymore. He's been a fantastic servant to the club but I think his time at United is running out.

Yes, his time is up as a main player for United. He was very fortunate that Moyes (who was in awe of him having given him his debut at Everton), and Van Gaal (made Rooney his first name on the team sheet regardless of form) for the last three years refused to think of a team without him but Mourinho until today, was showing he was struggling with that decision. Ferguson would have bombed him out had he stayed in 2013 and alot of what he said around that time has proved true.

As noted above, he's played 700 games or so since he was 16 and with his physical characteristics that drove his game, the forcefulness, strength, pace, have all deserted him as he has gotten older. Then not helped by his managers suggesting he can make it as a midfielder when he clearly can't. He can still play as a striker at a mid-table level with pace around him as he can still finish. Alot of his marketability and sponsorship endorsements are driven by him being a focal point for club and country which explains why he hasn't retired from international duty as he should have after the Euros.

Him dismissing the criticism around him as rubbish shows a lack of self analysis of his game and is happily to be shoved anywhere as long as he's in the team. Today's performance showed United with Ibrahimovic as a focal point with pace, precision and energy, around him can get results.

Stick a fork in him, he's done. (Well, at United for definite)

He's been spending more time at casinos throwing away a reported £500k than on the pitch and he's done everything at United with trophies, records etc. Time to respectfully leave and try to continue his career but IDK why Everton want him back and besides that, his options are very limited.
