Most interesting part of WWII?

Postby Matteo » Dec 07, '13, 4:35 pm

WWII has so many different facets and stories. Which 'part' of it do you find most compelling, from a historic standpoint? I have always been interested in Germany's invasion of Poland and how the latter became brutally occupied by not only The Third Reich but also Stalin's Soviet Union. The amount of destruction the country endured was unparalleled. It's amazing the country managed to rebuild its infrastructure and improve its economic conditions so quickly.

D-Day, mainly because my grandpa was in one of the first waves on Juno beach on D-Day and he survived.

Auschwitz and the other concentration and extermination camps, and the effect WWII had on Britain, my own country.

The factors leading up to it are pretty interesting to read about as well.

I always thought the dropping of the atomic bombs were pretty interesting things to read about. Especially reading the two different prospectives of people who either thought it was necessary or unecessary and complety unethical.

Well if you count "The Winter War" as part of WWII (and you really should) the Fins kicked the hell out of the Soviets. They used to lead them down narrow roads or wait for their supply trains to move down, blow up the side of a hill so the Soviets could neither move forward or retreat. Then the Fins would sweep in on skies shoot a bunch of them then ski off. Pretty bad ass.

I also liked a lot of the things the French Foreign Legion did. Since some of the Legionnaires sided with the Vichy government and others sided with the Free French there were a few battles where Legionaries fought Legionaries. During one battle around 1,000 of the Vichy Legionaries basically said "fuck this, fuck you" to the axis and joined theie free Frenc brothers.
