Which country is the biggest security threat?

Postby Matteo » Nov 28, '13, 4:49 am

In theory, North Korea would be the biggest security threat. The state exhibits endless rhetoric, has a working nuclear programme, and a tyrannical, sociopathic dictator. However, they really do not pose much of a threat to the international community since any attack perpetrated by the state would be suicide. The supposed 'quality' of their nuclear weapons are greatly exaggerated, too. I doubt they could even reach mainland Japan. Their fear-mongering is usually a callout for foregin aid from the United States and China.

I think Pakistan is a large security threat. Unfortunately, the state is riddled and bombarded with terrorism, corruption, and extremism. They also are a nuclear weapon state, so this naturally heightens its conflicts with India. The ongoing dispute between the two nations poses as a threat to the international community, especially if the wrong weapons and resources end up in the wrong hands.

United States. We are pretty much the only nation that can get away with deciding another country is in the wrong just because we say they are. I also have a problem with the fact that the only nation in the world who has ever dropped a nuclear weapon on humans and civilians at that feels we have the right to say who can responsibly have nuclear weapons.

I'd agree with terrorism, corruption and extremism. Corruption has been there forever, I've witnessed it myself and it makes you laugh thinking about it at how common it is but also on a wider-scale.

Extremism and terrorism goes back to 2001 when Musharraf, in a bid to show his power and regain some standing in the international community after his unaccepted coup in 1999, went along and since then even Pakistan civilians, security forces, police have all been caught up in it. Sad especially when I think of Pakistan, in my first visit in 1996, had so much potential and still does to some degree but its been washed away as of late. Had Musharraf rejected the US's request (or demand one might say as Musharraf said the US threatened to bomb Pakistan if they didn't) then the chaos wouldn't be as bad.

Nuclear weapons won't get in the wrong hands. They're not toys anyone can use them and look after them, e.g. terrorists. Sure there are tensions between India-Pakistan on the border in Kashmir but as long as there's not another Mumbai-style incident, the relationship will be suspicious but calmer. Pakistan know they won't win any war against India simply due to the numerical difference in strength between both sides.

On the question, I can understand why Pakistan is viewed as a threat but I'd probably say the US. If they had a more measured, fair approach in alot of the international issues then the world might be slightly more safer. This policy of black and white and nothing in between doesn't help. Second would be Israel. A nuclear armed state in the Middle East where no-one is allowed nuclear weapons besides Israel and that gives them an insane advantage of their neighbours if a war broke out.

Tahiti along side the rest of the pacific island folk. I don't trust those "little" islanders. Hidden way down there in the south pacific. Who knows what they could be planning. Mark my words, the Polynesians will rise up and overthrow us all. American Samoa and Hawaii are our only hopes to combat the rising menace.

+ NSA spying
+ Treatment of Snowden and Manning for exposing government's crimes
+ Monsanto
+ Drone strikes
+ Use of Agent Orange in Vietnam, white phosphoros in Iraq and depleted Uranium in Iraq and Afghanistan yet considers going to war against Syria as 'the use of chemical weapons is a moral obscenity'

I can't even be bothered to list them.

^ Drones are not strictly confined to the US, though. Russia and China are developing them. They are also remarkably advanced and highly strategic technology that will certainly change the face of conventional war. The US have used drones irresponsibly at times, but they are not inherently a negative thing. They've done some good, even for the US.
