Greenfell Tower tragedy

Postby AkydefGoldberg » Jun 14, '17, 4:20 am

Massive tower block of flats in West London underwent a horrific fire last night on a lower floor that permeated upwards, blocking many people up, some dying and many having to jump from the building. 6 deaths.

Apparently landlords were criticised before for security failings and apparently, no fire alarms rang during the incident..

Looks like there's going to be a full inquiry, and rightly so.

The implications of this could be huge. There's plenty of identical buildings around the West Midlands which I'm sure are no more prepared for a fire of that magnitude than this one. It wouldn't surprise me to see some of them torn down over the next few years following this.

Also Teresa May is a prize twat for citing security concerns as to why she didn't meet with the local community. Why even bother showing up at all? Bellend.

Yes and she got shown by Jeremy Corbyn, who actually showed what leadership is about speaking to relatives, community people. Even Sadiq Khan took hostile questioning and accepted it. Theresa May, behaving like one of her predecessors (Thatcher) who did the same after a tragedy (Hillsborough),

So many questions from this: the death toll that is being reported is nowhere near the number it should be; the landlords not paying the 5k it would have taken to buy non-flammable cladding plus the many security omissions such as lack of sprinklers, fire exits. Sure, it wasn't ideal as a building perhaps but it could have been prevented or the damage not so far reaching.

And to top it off, Sajid Javid said there needs to be time for experts to have this say. This, coming from a guy who as a landlord joined 76 MPs in voting down to improve renting facilities for people.

The stories of people coming together, has like the terror attacks, been warming and the Muslims who came to the scene early to help once the fire began, but this could lead to major (criminal) repercussions - and rightly so - for all culpable.

Awful awful tragedy. Those poor people have lost absolutely everything, including their lives in some cases. They are still searching the tower for bodies, think the death toll was at 17 last time I checked but they expect it to rise significantly.

This could and should have been prevented. Sick of hearing people claim it's not a political issue. Of course it is, it became a political issue the moment 300+ Conservative MP's (72 of which are landlords themselves), voted against an amendment to the housing bill put forward by Jeremy Corbyn, which would have seen safety measures put in place to stop something like this happening. Not to mention that they spent £10million on a refurb of this building only last year, apparently basic health and safety wasn't part of this budget.

This blog is quite interesting, seems like residents have had concerns for a while:

Also love this article relating to the tragedy:

Why weren't these people listened to? Why has it taken for something catastrophic to happen for those in power to take note? Someone somewhere has blood on their hands, these people have lost everything. It's so sad.
