Because its a privilege that has been given to us. Just like the privilege one is given to drive a car, if you live in a country that has very little cars and you are a custom to not driving you would be asking why people have an attachment to owning a vehicle. Americans are extremely patriotic and the fact that we can own firearms as a patriotic right is why we own guns.

And no, it does not signify a lack of intelligence.
