Chipotle asks customers not to bring guns to restaurants, gun nuts freak out

NEW YORK (AP) — Chipotle is asking customers not to bring firearms into its stores after it says gun rights advocates brought military-style assault rifles into one of its restaurants in Texas.

The Denver-based company notes that it has traditionally complied with local laws regarding open and concealed firearms.

But in a statement Monday, the company said that "the display of firearms in our restaurants has now created an environment that is potentially intimidating or uncomfortable for many of our customers."

The announcement came after a petition by Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, which has called on other companies to ban firearms in their stores as well. The group said its petition was in reaction to open-carry gun activists appearing at a Dallas-area Chipotle restaurant over the weekend.

Erika Soto Lamb, a spokeswoman for the group, said she thought the move by Chipotle was a "bold statement," especially considering its previous stance of complying with local laws.

Many states allow people to carry licensed guns in some way, but some businesses exercise their right to ban firearms.

A Chipotle spokesman didn't immediately respond when asked if the company's request was an outright ban, or how it would respond if people continued to bring firearms into its restaurants.

Last year, Starbucks Corp. also told customers that guns were no longer welcome in its cafes after it had to temporarily close a store in Newtown, Connecticut, to avoid a demonstration by gun rights advocates. The company said it shut down the store out of respect for the community, where 20 school children and six educators had been slain.

The Seattle-based coffee chain stopped short of a ban, however, saying it didn't want to put its workers in the position of having to ask people carrying guns to leave its stores. Its carefully worded decision also underscored how major companies need to walk a fine line on highly divisive political issues.

Likewise, Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. noted in its statement that "there are strong arguments on both sides of this issue." It said it hoped that customers who oppose carrying guns in public agree that "it is the role of elected officials and the legislative process to set policy in this area."

They didn't even completely ban guns, and gun nuts are still freaking out all over Facebook and Twitter where this story is being posted. It's pretty hilarious, so many people talking about boycotting Chipotle over this. But why the fuck do you need to bring your gun in to Chipotle in the first place?

If you're in a restaurant and don't feel safe without a gun, perhaps you shouldn't be eating there in the first place.

Guns activists will get pitchforks over anything about their rights for guns. Nothing new here.

In this case, I think any business working with customers in a family friendly environment have a right to allow no guns in their establishment. It's not about infringing on peoples rights, it's about making their customers comfortable, happy, and safe they can eat there. This is all about maintaining their business, and keep profits, not to hurt guns activists rights. It's not really any different then a "no shirt/shoes no service sign" at the doorway. People don't want to eat next to a half naked guy with stinky feet, just like some people don't want to eat next to a person with a loaded gun leaning on their chair.

Asking people to keep their guns concealed would even do the trick. Why can't people leave their firearms in the car? Isn't it illegal to drive with firearms not in a safe box and loaded? Why did these guys have to bring their weapons in? Military grade assault rifles at that. I am sure if I walked into a restaurant with my knives and laid it on the table while I ate, it would make people uncomfortable, this is common sense. People don't care about your rights, they are more curious why you feel the need to show your weapons in a safe place. Is it not safe? Are you not a safe person to be around? I don't care if it's your right, use some common sense. These guys might as well walk into a party and say "I got guns and could kill everyone but I won't do it."

Well this is pretty stupid, and it makes gun rights advocates look dumb in the process. Why are you bringing an assault rifle to Chipotle in the first place, Jesus Christ.

I am on both sides of this, were I live its not uncommon to see someone with a side arm on there belt in gas stations, restaurants or even Walmart. Were I stand is that under no reasonable circumstance does a person need to carry a hunting riffle Oran assault rifle into a public establishment unless that establishment has something to do with firearms such as repair or sales.
The second problem is most of these idiots just read "chipotle bans guns in their restaurants" and they instinctively go into defense mode about gun rights without reading the details. Almost every true gun enthusiast will agree thatthese retards had no reason to carry those weapons into the store.
