Lucha Underground 6/3/15 Discussion Thread

Postby EmperorWu » Jun 08, '15, 12:19 am

I'm behind on Lucha Underground. I need to go back and catch up. So that's why the storyline is a little confusing to me. Having said that they actually seem to have an overarching storyline which is great. When was the last time WWE planned and executed a long term story that didn't seem like they were making it up as they went? I don't know. Anyway I'm intrigued to say the least. Also the house bands are a great part of the atmosphere at the temple and I like that they bring new groups in. These people know how to produce a wrestling show for TV. ROH, TNA, NXT, RAW, it don't matter in my book Lucha Underground has the best commentary team in the game right now with Matt Stryker and Vampiro. They also have a good ring announcer. Good voice, good inflections, and oh so sexy.

Jack Evans vs Argentis is first. Dario cuts a good promo offering the winner a "medallion" which I will assume is like an entry ticket into a contendership match or something. Evans is talking and showboating, good on him. He instantly stands out from the pack. He want's a job and is willing to earn it. The quality of wrestling at LU is so much higher it's ridiculous. The opening match for this show was better than anything I've seen all week. Jack Evans is a star waiting to fly. His backslide bridge pin was off the hook, I've never seen that before.

Diavari and Ezikiel Jackson have a good vignette, they discuss having the Mack join their trios team to challenge for the title. The Mack cracks me up. He's like a smaller JYD, but man can he go. So surprising. Anyway Cage kicks his ass in the locker room to join the team. This is followed by another vignette where some asian girl kicks the shit out of Chavo and the Cholo guys. This was a little too movie like for me. Still it wasn't bad.

Big Ryck/Diavari/Cage vs Trios Champions Son of Havoc/Ivelisse/Angelico is next. Interesting fact SoH and Ive were both on the same season of Tough Enough, I love seeing them work together. Also Angelico is really fucking good, and is a very handsome young man. WWE should be knocking down his door. This match was really good. They had the big man style vs the high flying style and they blended it perfectly. Ryck put Angelico in a delayed suplex, which he handed over to Cage. Angelico had a great over the turnbuckle 360 front flip into a midair knee to the face. SoH got major air and hang time when he did a shooting star press. He is one of my favorites. Anyway they did a great job selling the disunity on the champion's team but they manage to pull off a win thanks to an assist from Tejano. This was a very good match.

Next was the inter-gender singles submission match between Sexy Star and Pentagon Jr. This guy is great and did not go easy on her. She took it and gave him some in return. Pentagon gave her a nasty ass chop, and a fucking great super kick. I saw some pretty innovative submissions and she more than held her own against him. The crowd chanted this is awesome. There was a lot of high impact moves and it was a good match overall. Pentagon won with assistance from Super Fly, then he beats down Sexy Star after the match. Vampiro comes for the save and ends up staring him down before backing down. Stryker sells how despite Vampiro wanting to fight he's now retired and no longer a young man. Then they do another vignette. With Vampiro basically fighting his demons of violence and not wanting to do bad things again, but also clearly wanting to fight. It wasn't bad.

Overall another great show. 8/10

I'm just trying to do my part in getting discussion going. I hope that in reviewing all the current shows people will find a product they like and participate more. We'll see. I was going to do a Raw one too, but frankly I don't want to re-watch it again. I might do one for tomorrow's episode though. Someone had an NXT discussion going but that kind of died out. If they don't pick it back up I'll try to add it to my list. I'd rather not start 5 reviews a week though. :P

The crappy thing is I work nights so I have to catch up on the weekends, after everything is old news.

Its a really good show, I feel its a bit over produced though. It feels to movie/day time drama ish at times.
I love that they have a long ongoing story but like you said, its a bit confusing if your not invested into the product, maybe some backstory from the commentators after these backstage shots would help with the confusion.

Yeah I agree. Even if you watch every episode in a row, it's a bit vague. You never really know what is going on or where certain characters fit in the overall story. Granted this mysteriousness is intentional on their part.
