Pubtalk Forum Ultimate Wrestler Tournament

I was just thinking of something that could be a fun idea and sort of a cool activity for a couple of weeks. A forum I used to go to had this big tournament-style game, where one guy created a bunch of poll topics asking members to choose between Wrestler A or Wrestler B, for example Macho Man or HBK, Undertaker or AJ Styles, etc. People then discussed which guy was better, and whichever wrestler won the poll advanced to the next round. This elimination process went on until it came down to the last two wrestlers. Basically, the point of the tournament was to determine what the forum's favorite wrestler was and to generate some interesting discussion along the way.

Would you be down for this?

I'd be down for this as long as we keep it to 8-16 wrestlers to start. I mean we all know damn well there is no point in having a guy like Zack Ryder or even Mark Henry. They simply are not beating out guys like Bryan. I mean let's be honest, I can all but promise that if we did everyone in TNA and WWE (sorry but the ROH and other "Indy" guys wouldn't make the cut when a lot of people don't know who they are) that I can name at least 6 guys from WWE who will likely make the elite 8.

Plus the possibility of

But I don't really see how anyone else (I don't honestly think any of 7-12) has a chance at winning. I do like the idea of tourney but as long as we keep it small.

That could be fun and playing off the March Madness idea put forward earlier what if we did four different regions (promotions) with 8 candidates. You take the 8 best from WWE currently, Impact currently, ROH currently and Attitude Era guys. A person can vote in whichever promotions they want/know about then after three rounds of voting we have our Final Four. We do the WWE winner vs Impact winner and ROH winner vs Attitude winner those two winners face off for the ultimate wrestler winner.

It wouldn't be hard to come up with the matchups either I'm thinking:

A separate thread for each wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing. It'd clog up this part of the forum a bit, but it's a quiet part of the forum generally - it might help people to remember it and post some more stuff in here.

Probably a win by Bryan is inevitable at the moment, but it'd still be interesting to watch it play out. I'd be backing Roode to win the whole thing, despite there being no chance that will actually happen.

At first I was thinking it would be an "all time greats" thing with Bret Hart, Hogan, Macho Man, HBK, etc. But just doing guys from the current rosters could probably be a better idea. Especially if Viazon sort of did this already and Kurt Angle came out on top. While Kurt would still be in the tournament if we included current rosters, he probably won't go as far because people would consider what work he's doing NOW as opposed to his overall career.

What would the criteria be for the "current" WWE roster? Do we include Brock Lesnar? Undertaker? Triple H? That could potentially sway the balance a bit from Punk or Bryan who seem to be the odds on favorites. Granted, Triple H isn't very popular right now but I reckon Lesnar will go pretty far.

Yeah, that was kind of the idea. Generate some discussion on Wrestler A vs Wrestler B, otherwise people are just posting a bunch of names.

1. I agree with separate threads, creates more individual discussion for each case rather than people just listing their votes.

2. I'd actually still go with the all-timers. I think it'd make for better debate. With the current roster there's a pretty clear hierarchy.

I'd prefer old-timers/legends because don't really watch the product so can't judge on guys like Rollins, Ambrose etc as much.

I'm with Tim on the All-Time list. I think that easily draws more debate and gets more people involved. Today's WWE it's pretty clear who the best workers are. It wouldn't get interesting until the last few matchups probably.

I think the best way to start would be for people to throw out all-time names and we can fill up a field of 64, then maybe a handful of people can sort them into brackets or something.

I'm not sure Austin Aries, Bobby Roode, Samoa Joe, RVD are guys I'd put in my Top 32 All time, even Booker T.

Aren't there some prominent guys we've forgotten? Bruno Sammartino? Or is he too early for this?

Yeah, some of the names I would take out. I know it may seem fair to include some TNA guys, but they wouldn't be the only promotion that is without a representative. I would keep AJ Styles but replace Samoa Joe, Bobby Roode, and Austin Aries without a doubt.

In my opinion, how about just make a nominations thread? Everyone lists their personal top 32 (IN RANDOM ORDER just to keep the voting process a mystery and unique; this way, nobody knows who is so and so's true #1) and names with the most mentions/nominations get in. We can start the voting process after this is over with. Give everyone a week to put their list in.

The only issue would be tallying up how many mentions someone has, but I am certain a lot would be willing to help on that.
