I know I've yet to comment on one or two other shows prior to the PPV but I've just read Genocide and as it's fresh in the memory I think I'd best get my thoughts up on this first.
Gryphon vs Zaid - I really enjoy the little details included to show off Zaid's personality so seeing him rip up a fan's side on his way to the ring was hilarious. One little word of advice I'd give to whomever wrote first was some of the dialogue read a little...clunkily. Rather than writing
"Gryphon in the ring but Gryphon slips past him and beelines for Zaid. Zaid runs around" try to include nicknames or monikers to try and keep the dialogue reading fresh. For example you could write
"Gryphon in the ring but the Frenchman slips past him and beelines for Zaid. 'The A Lister' runs around...". It isn't a big deal or anything and it's something I find myself struggling with at times but it's just a bit of advice should you want it!
Really enjoyed Zaid's use of underhand tactics to try and get an advantage and then breaking his own pin because he's such a cocky asshole, great stuff. The theme of the match worked really well with Zaid cheating whenever he can but getting out of harm's way whenever Gryphon attempted to build up some momentum and I think it worked really well. He kept Richard frustrated and stole a win, good stuff.
The Paths of Destiny - Glad to get to write another of these little segments between Foster and Daz - I think they've become somewhat of a staple of PPV's and it's going to be really cool to put all these segments together at the end of the year and look at how these two men have changed in that time.
Sears vs Hess - Has saucernips gone for good then? Bummer. This feud had so much potential and this match could've been a showstealer but I suspect it may wind up being another squash for Hess. Maybe not...Sears kicking out and getting the roll up...and there we go with the big win for Hess. I think it was a good call to have Sears kick out of the Field Plow, it made the character look tougher (as much as he could under the circumstances) before Amos got the eventual win. It seems like ShaneO has had to write solo for the entirety of PCW, hopefully he'll get to actually work with someone properly next cycle.
Secret No More - Good promo from Amos Hess as per, though it does feel hollow if saucernips isn't around to continue the feud. It was a shock to find out that Sears is gay and I really wish we could learn more about the character going forward because that is a story that I've never seen told in pro-wrestling/e-fedding and would've been really intriguing. Ah well.
NPT - Better promo from NPT/Ace. Looking forward to seeing the open challenge on the next Onslaught and learning more about the unstable character.
A Man's Man - 'Mecca of Manliness' - lmao. Hilarious promo from Orion, who shines brighter each week. #wordplay
Reece vs Bishop - I agree that the leapfrog/spinebuster counter was a really cool spot to open the action with and counter Reece's first wave of momentum before it could even get going. Really digging Reece's fast-paced, hard-hitting style and following the post match assault the fact he's getting so much offence in is a testament to the toughness of the character and would be really endearing to a crowd. Great line on commentary highlighting Reece's heart following his kick-out from the Galaxy Slam. Big victory in the end for Orion but I fully expect this one to continue.
Omega vs Magnum - I forgot we're in Edmonton for the show, thunderous pop for Omega from his hometown crowd wearing a local jersey. Lightning quick start to the match with the Buffalo dropkicking the title belt into Phillips' face - yet again reminding me that Omega isn't as large as I always picture him for some reason haha. Loved how commentary referenced that Omega wasn't just fighting for himself or the crowd but also for his fallen former colleagues from SoS who Phillips has annihilated in the past month, great little detail to further the story and remind us just why we're rooting so hard for the good guys.
Looks like we're about to get violent as Magnum goes after Omega's arm and the commentators inform us how clever it is to neutralize an opponent's limb to prevent him from being able to fight properly...hope we don't see anything like that later in the night...
We have our first two count-outs of the match and Omega survives a 6 and an 8 count, good build-up there as we again reference Magnum's demolition of SoS legends which I dig because it adds continuity to the bout. LOVED the scoop slam onto the unfolded table, really innovative piece of offence that you don't see that often. Magnum pausing to get some more tobacco out was a great touch and I expect this one to be ending soon...
...or not! Beautiful counter spot with Omega avoiding the chair at the death before yelling out of name of his town - you can just imagine how fucking ape-shit the crowd would be going at this point but similarly you can just imagine how deflated they'd be watching Magnum reverse once more and send the Buffalo crashing and burning into that table. The ending was sickening, Lone Star Slam with the chair wrapped around Omega's throat...wow, brutal. Having the referee scrap the 10 count right away and end the match was a brilliant decision and made the finish much more powerful, sold expertly with the commentary as well. Great job on the match, guys - really enjoyed it.
Silent Prairie - I said the finale of the match was powerful, so was this segment. After the way the match ended with emotions high this needed to be more reserved and under-stated in order to really sell the severity of what just happened. How poignant that this happened in Omega's hometown, got to think that's it for the Buffalo. Who can stop Magnum now? Good segment.
Doom's Day - Really digging this segment so far. Doom starting off with the face pop welcoming a veteran back into the fold only to call it out as bollocks and instantly turn heel, good stuff. Not sure how I feel about the 'death' stuff but it certainly worked well to introduce his new moniker of Aaron Augustus Reed I guess. Didn't like that he was drunk and I'm not sure why he really needed to be but this segment definitely has me interested in what comes next and I suppose you can't ask for any more than that.
Man on a Mission - Jeeez the serious tone of the show continues. Can The Master please show up? I need some comic relief right about now
Logan vs Evans - The split allegiances thing before the match could even get under way was interesting and the fact the commentary team was used to highlight it further may well be serving as a bit of foreshadowing, we shall see. The dynamic of this match is probably the most interesting of the night - we're not used to seeing Shane Evans in a state like this and with him going for the choke right off the bat, it's clear he just wants to fucking murder Logan as quick as he can and be done with it.
Logan seems to be playing a dangerous game in the early going, repeatedly getting the upperhand on Evans and seemingly rubbing it in with the crowd cheering him all the way. The way I see it that could be his gameplan, piss Evans off that much and push him so far over the edge that his emotions cloud his judgment and that's what gives him the win but on the other-hand if that backfires he's in big trouble. Lmao didn't have to wait long until we see Evans GOING OFF
The fast paced nature of this match really compliments the way the show in general has gone tonight and again we see the crowd referenced slightly as the fight spills over into their domain. Yep, there we are - for the first time in the night following a well written sequence we have the crowd more firmly in favor of Logan than Evans and I'm loving that this is the story being told right now. Great moment in the match when it looked like Evans was about to help Logan down only to instantly start pummeling him as he lay defenseless, I loved that spot and the story unraveling in-front of our eyes becomes ever so clearer.
The character of Shane Evans has instantly become one of my favorites right now, he seems a completely different person, dangerous and void of reason, the fact the crowd has well and truly turned on him and him being furious about it may well be enough to tip him over the edge. Logan on the other hand is slowly abolishing my prior opinion of him - for months now I've been saying that this nice guy routine is all an act and whilst it may take time, eventually he's going to reveal his true colors but for the first time...I honestly think he may well be a changed man - it took you longer to win me over but I think you've finally done it which is a testament to both the booking of the feud and the writing involved, so kudos for that.
Loved this match. I've probably not talked a great deal about the actual 'match' itself but who cares when the story being told is that good. I can definitely see why it may be considered match of the night for sure. So pumped to see where we go from here with both characters.
On A Roll - Finally! Some much needed comic relief! Really enjoyed this promo from Morrison and Bernard and he's right, technically he has beaten a bunch of former champions and again the longer he goes without 'real' competition the more foil the character has to work with, good stuff.
Bernard vs Tsuyoshi - Lmfao. Even Bernard's fictional opponents are...well...fictional
This was brilliant comic relief needed on this show so far, so good job.
The Last Walk - Great promo. You really get a sense that this is all or nothing for The British Rose. Let's go.
Daz vs Miller - Thunderous start to this one with them going at it before the match can even officially get under way, should set the tone for the duration of the contest. You've got to wonder if Daz is going to learn his lesson though, from the get-go I've assumed that Quinn was brought in to help him keep his emotions in check and help him out should anything cloud his judgment as it did at the last PPV but right from the off here he's gone after Miller and it hasn't taken long for his reckless nature to backfire on him as he crashes into the guardrails.
"Fuck me? Fuck you." badass line from Miller who has really come along during this feud, he seems to have well and truly mastered the art of mind-games and he's reaping the rewards yet again. Back to my point, Daz spitting in Miller's face - he's still showing signs that Miller is in his head and he needs to be careful, we've never seen Daz look as vulnerable as he has throughout this feud and that trend seems to be continuing right now.
In contrast though, I'm really loving seeing glimpses into the old British Rose when the referee continues to ask him if he wants to give up. Miller has seemed much more in control so far in the match even when he isn't on the defensive so for Daz to keep fighting back and show us some of his famous heart was a real nice touch as I'd begun to question if it was still there. Loved that Miller exploited Daz's brace, in a match where such details could be overlooked due to the violent nature and emotion of the match it was really cool to see Miller revert to form with a more composed, calculated style of offence, good stuff. Brilliant back and forth action sequence culminating in a Spencer Miller low-blow, stopping that momentum dead in it's tracks, love it.
The sequence of big-impact offence was written really nicely; from Miller, trapped in a Cloverleaf, rubbishing that referee's audacity to even ask if he wants to quit, to the Yakuza Kick/Samoan Drop/Mill Shot-Kill Shot all the way up to the Koji Clutch. Great stuff that really has you on the edge of your seat, back-and-forth, non-stop action that could go either way.
The ending was powerful. It was only a matter of time until Quinn's presence became a factor and the way the whole finale was written was really fucking good. Having Miller hit Quinn with the chair sky-rockets him through to a brand new level of despicable that not even Kaiser Cavanah can inhabit. Miller's dialogue through-out this whole portion was sublime too
"you're going to watch every second of this and know that it's your fault". I mean, dude.
Ridiculously clever way to end the match and have Daz say 'I Quit', Miller cements his place as the most evil son of a bitch in PCW and whilst the result won't matter to him in the slightest under the circumstances, Daz loses again. Interesting that we're made to question again whether this is the end for Daz - I surely wouldn't have thought so after Miller put his hands on Quinn, but who knows? The only thing I know for sure though, is that if this feud does continue, it's going to get a lot more violent...if that's even possible. Great match guys, you definitely out-did the first one in my book.
Catwalk vs The J-Team - I agree that after the way the show has gone so far it was nice to have a match not really motivated by bad-blood and one that shouldn't get violent. Good back and forth with the tactics in the early-going with Brody thumbing the eyes and Double J using the ropes as leverage on the pinfall attempt - good, fun stuff with the two teams playing a little game of 'one-upsmanship' here.
Loved the spot where BJ clapped his own hands together behind the back of the referee to make him think that a tag had been made - really clever stuff and the J-Team's use of those crafty tactics seems to be working thus far. Is it only me that marked for the O'Connor roll just because I know Dale was writing and I always smile when I read one of those?
Great sequence leading up to the finish with both sides hitting their share of power moves and I really dug the ending. Brody said he could out-cheat the J-Team and in the end that's exactly what he did, Melissa's presence proving vital once more which is key to any good manager and the J-Team remain looking strong in defeat. Good match and a much needed one at this stage of the card.
The Wedding - Oh boy, professional wrestling weddings...they don't have the best track record do they? Interested to see what's going to happen and whether what I think will happen...happens. Lmao platinum coated brass knuckles are quite the gift, not sure he'd be wise to wear them every day though! Uh-oh here we go commotion time...or not! The actual 'marriage' part of the ceremony somehow actually happens and the uproar begins afterwards which I thought was a nice way to avoid the usual cliches. I think we all knew Kyle was going to show up and the rest of the segment is pretty straight-forward. Good stuff though, nice breather from the in-ring action.
Foster vs Kaiser - First and foremost I need to say that I didn't pull anywhere near as much of my weight in this one as I should. I've been preoccupied in the last couple of weeks and really feel like I let Kaiser down - I know what it's like to work with someone who didn't step up when needed and I'm afraid that's what I was for this match, so I'll apologize again for that. Hope everyone enjoys the match though. The psychology worked really well I thought, the damage had already been done to Foster prior to the match so he knew he had to try and level the playing field as best he could as quick as he could if he was to stand a chance. The action was somewhat slower in the beginning than came at you thick and fast in the latter stages. I don't think this was as good as our Resurgence match but I take full responsibility for that and promise you all that I'll be bringing my A-game every week from here on in, you have my word on that!
-------------------------------------------------------
Fucking awesome show guys, what a mammoth read that was.
It's so hard to pick my Match of the Night because I really wanted to give it to Magnum/Omega due to how clearly I could envisage that match going down in the latter's hometown and the powerful nature of the ending and post-match. Then I read Evans/Logan and whilst I don't think the actual match was better than the Lone Star Title match, I do think the story was phenomenal and easily the best story told on the night.
I'm going to cast my vote for Daz/Miller though. Wonderful writing, characterization, action and drama in a match that topped the first one which wasn't an easy feat plus the result came as a shock as I sort of assumed Daz would be getting the win to set up a rubber match at the next PPV. Very clever finish that should spill over for one more month at least.
Hard to believe we've been doing this for a year already. Bring on the next one! PCW! PCW! PCW!
