Dean Ambrose isn't good

Postby prophet » Aug 22, '16, 11:39 am

Bland character. Boring, sloppy ring work. Stupid nickname. Average promo work. Awful champion is awful.

Thanks for your time.

The worst member of the Shield. Terrible seller. Boring mic work. Gimmick that doesn't translate to TV, he isn't crazy. Brought record low ratings as champion. Had boring matches with Jericho, Wyatt, Owens, just had a boring match with Ziggler. Should be a lower mid carder like The Miz is currently.

In an ideal world Seth would be a white hot babyface right now, Reigns would be a monster heel, and Ambrose would be a midcard heel.

I actually think his mic work has been really good over the last three weeks. He built the match with Ziggler pretty damn well and actually started to look like a star. Though other than that, I'd agree his mic work is generally pretty bad. He tries too hard and comes off quite phony and scripted. And he doesn't pull off the wacky Pillman thing. If you're going to ape someone who's great at something, make sure you're at least decent at it.

He's not great in the ring either. His moves all look contrived, there's a ton of wasted movement in his matches. That rebound clothesline thing is so fucking annoying after a while. I feel like his opponent could go get a sandwich in the time it takes him to hit the damn move.

I've been saying for ages that he's possibly the most overrated guy in the company. He's probably going to be feuding with Styles next, and if Styles doesn't get a great match out of him, then I don't know if there's much hope for him.

Occasionally I do see glimmers of something in the guy. But he's been around a long time now, and he still hasn't managed to put it all together.

I don't totally agree, he's been doing some his best work in ages the last three weeks since the brand split. His promos have been a lot more realistic and not jokey like they had been. His heelishness against Ziggler was great, calling him out about showing off and losing all the time. He did exactly what he needed to do against a babyface challenger who was lesser than him, he acted just heel enough to get people to want to root for Dolph to defeat him.

In the ring his moveset isn't the greatest to be sure, but he's capable of having pretty good matches as we've seen. People were saying his match at Roadblock with Triple H was better than the Mania match with Roman and he should have been given the title he was over around then

Seriously? He had record low ratings, just like Reigns had record low ratings, and Rollins had record low rating before him, and Triple H had record low ratings before that. But it's all his fault right? :facepalm

No but he didn't exactly turn the ship around. And the point stands that the Shield aren't good for ratings when they're not a unit.

And really if we're blaming people it's the genius creative team that deserve the most blame.

Ratings have been falling for years and years, in just about everything on TV too. Everyone's heroes Daniel Bryan and CM Punk didn't help, neither did The Rock or Brock Lesnar.

The Rock and Lesnar were bigger draws as champions than any of the Shield. Punk would have been great for the ratings if they didn't ruin him. He was a terribly booked champion. The wheels completely fell off when creative made him recite respect promos over and over again. The ratings have gone down since the Austin heel turn yes but the decline was starting to plateau. They even had a ratings boost in 2007 iirc but it didnt last.

Unfortunately a guy like Dean and a heel Seth have little crossover appeal to the mainstream. WWE became popular again for a brief moment in 2011 because Punk crossed over a little. It wasn't just goofy wrasslin it was attitude era esque.

This is what I don't get, everyone says WWE isn't popular, and that interest and ratings are sagging badly. And yet WWE is more visible in the mainstream than I can remember since the Attitude Era. ESPN just launched it's own WWE section and covers WWE quite a bit. There's a million wrestling podcasts and more starting by the day. A bunch of mainstream websites have regular WWE columns; Rolling Stone, Forbes, Sports Illustrated, etc.

That's because you're on the internet. Of course in 2016 it's going to seem like the business is more popular than the attitude era when all you had was dial up internet and WCW live hosted by Mark Madden and Disco Inferno.

There's been plenty of pictures of WWE darkening parts ofntbe crowd and tapering them off because the seats didn't sell. The UFC is the most succesful wrestling promotion in the world. That's where all the marks went anyway.

And then after all those promos about Ziggler being all show and Ambrose being all go, Ziggler tried to win the match at Summerslam and Ambrose spent the whole match showing off.

And then he won. So he still did "go". When did he show off? He only did the Ziggler hip swivel once.

He never hinted at turning heel, he superkicked Ambrose on Smackdown, but only after Ambrose had been ripping him for weeks. It's clearly been a babyface vs babyface feud with both guys showing a bit of an edge.

He was doing stuff like that all through the match. He did the teasing the superkick thing too, and between most of his spots he'd do something to play to the crowd/make fun of Ziggler. Even on commentary the story of the match was Ambrose's disdain for Ziggler because of all the little mocking things he did.
