3 Steps to Fix WWE

So things have been pretty negative since Mania about WWE, so let's turn that into a thread shall we?

If you could do three things to improve WWE significantly, what 3 things would you do?

WWE is not fixable in 3 steps.

1. Hire decent, passionate writing staff and let them do the job. They shouldn't have to tailor everything to suit McMahon's every need. He monopolises everything and I reckon Creative lives in fear of the higher ups.

2. Decide who warrants a push on talent/merit rather than picking a new flavour of the month or pushing someone because they're well liked by certain individuals.

3. Assign different teams to work on a specific aspect of the show (Divas, IC Title Scene, Tag-Team etc..) and inspire competition within the teams to hopefully create some prestige in parts of the card where there hasn't been any for years.

I could go on but I'll abide by the rules and stay with three.

Okay, here are three fairly broad steps that could make a big difference if implemented promptly and correctly.

1. Character Based Booking: Everyone on the roster should have a specific, detailed character and the booking team should have the traits of each character documented. In a lot of cases this is just going to involve quantifying exactly what makes each character different from the others. None of this "my character is just me with the volume dialed up" shit either. If that's their character then fair enough, but I'd still want a list of specific personality traits that can be referenced when creating angles.

With all of this information documented, the bookers would be instructed to write stories based on the personalities of the wrestlers, rather than changing a wrestler's personality to fit into a generic story. So narcissist heels won't necessarily go brutalizing their opponents and ruthless bastards won't run away as soon as the babyface is within shouting range. It'd make stories more unique and interesting by default and would slowly create a more rich history on which to base future stories.

2. Book The Entire Roster: The WWE has more than enough hours of television a week to use their entire roster, yet they don't even use half of it. I don't just mean getting people on television either: everyone should be in a feud or an angle, or at least have some character development going on at any given time. The booking team should have a list of the roster when they plot their television for the week and they should ensure (as best they can) that everyone is given something meaningful to do on at least one of the shows. The guys who are bigger stars or who get over faster can be given more than the others, but everyone should get something.

3. Listen to the Fans: The company spends far too much time fighting with its audience, while the relationship should run a lot smoother than that. WWE can be embarrassingly stubborn when it doesn't get its way, but it would be very easy to keep the fans onside just by listening to their reactions and changing their booking accordingly.

If a face is getting booed all the time, then turn him heel. If a heel keeps getting cheered then turn him face. But make sure to keep their characters close enough to what they were before so the reactions won't change along with the alignment. If someone is getting a huge reaction then push them, if they're getting no reaction then put them on the back burner slightly while plotting a way to get them over. Listen to fan suggestions and theories on social media and take them on board. This stuff sounds simple, but it's still one of the company's biggest failings. For a company that hypes Twitter and Facebook and the WWEUniverse so much, it seems super reluctant to actually interact meaningfully with its fans.

Stop living in the past: What worked during Attitude Era won't necessarily work nowadays - using the same old wrestlers, stories and weird, non-contemporary values as worked before is not only boring, but uncomfortable to watch at times.
Cull: This is kind of a subheading for step one, and I don't just mean the roster (but them too). Take any of the stale writing/production staff and chuck them out on their ear - and if they're beloved members of the WWE family or whatever just give them a job elsewhere (one that won't wreck the product).

Learn the abilities of their roster: I'm talking strengths, weaknesses, and whether they can be improved upon, reapplied in different ways/settings etc. It often seems to me that they don't capitalise on what they already have. They need to use people, and use them effectively - and they need to realise that being over is a definite strength.

Respect the context: They need to write, execute, and market effectively in a media market that is wide open for consumer communication. The internet matters, folks, and it's not going away. They do the right thing on occasion, but the company's incredibly obtuse about it generally. As a business and a product, they lack the ability to roll with the punches with any kind of consistency; so I'd say they need to be willing to plan, but also to contingency-plan when it's appropriate.
