Fabulous Moolah Memorial Battle Royal drawing criticisms from fans

Some fans point out serious issues with a women's battle royal named after Fabulous Moolah.

Last night, WWE announced the Fabulous Moolah Memorial Battle Royal which is named after the woman they said was their first and longest reigning champion. Concerns from fans were apparent immediately as they replied to the WWE tweet and tweets from wrestler.

Moolah has been accused by former trainees and wrestlers of heinous crimes while she was a promoter. She has been accused of using her female talent as sexual currency to further her own business and in some cases she allegedly drugged her victims so they could be raped.

If fans wish to find more details on the accusations against Moolah, Fightful's Sean Ross Sapp tweeted out the following reddit thread last night and there are other resources around the Internet.

If this gains enough traction they might change it to the Jillian Hall Memorial Battle Royal.

I swear, sometimes the WWE makes decision that would make one think they are run by some of the dumbest fucking people in America. You would think they would be aware of this potential backlash. It'd be like if NFL announced some shit like "OJ Simpson Award: Awarded to the best RB in the NFL". Like, why? There is no way a billion dollar company should be overlooking this.

They deserve all the negativity thrown their way. It makes them look stupid.

It's almost worse than that. The most ridiculous part of this is that they're using this to try and turn Moolah into some kind of feminist icon, claiming that she was a trailblazer for gender equality and women's wrestling. Whereas in reality, she pimped out female wrestlers and treated them like dirt, and she held women's wrestling back decades. She's being celebrated for exactly those areas where she did the most damage. It would be like creating a 'Chris Benoit Memorial Father of the Year Award'.

We've been seeing it on television all our lives: they love to rewrite their history. It's just particularly gross in a situation like this one. I guess Moolah was champion for so long, that she feels like the obvious choice for something like this. But it's not like she's remembered fondly, and they didn't need to pay tribute to anyone with this.

Celebrating the history of the women's division is a little weird anyway, as the whole point of the women's revolution was that women's wrestling in WWE has sucked until pretty recently.

It's madness that in the internet age and during the height of the #MeToo movement, WWE would try to market someone so reprehensible as a feminist hero. It would be like naming a yearly charitable award at the Hall of Fame after a known bigot.

Oh wait, they did that too. The McMahons are just shitty people.

WWE doing what people of the ilk of the McMahons do and trying to bury what they dismiss as "fake news". has disabled comments on the video on youtube for the Moolah Battle Royal.

If I were them, I would issue an apology and agree to change the name. It is simple. WWE will get good publicity for doing the right thing and their fans will be appreciative that they listened and understood.

I don't know why they would be so insistent on keeping the Moolah name attached. Even if this doesn't blow up in major circles (Deadspin and Forbes have already covered it), it still isn't something you should want to be connected to.

I think it mostly comes down to ego and disrespect for everyone else. McMahon's a billionaire and a friend of Donald Trump. No one is allowed to disagree with a billionaire or a friend of Donald Trump. Their the smartest people in the world after all, if you disagree with them you are the one that's wrong.

The Observer are now reporting that Moolah's name is being removed from the Battle Royal.

Heard that as well. Apparently, protesting some things can make a difference.

The talk now is that WWE changed the name specifically to appease one of their sponsors - Snickers. The company put out a statement saying that they didn't approve of the name and intended to raise their concerns with WWE. So if anyone was shocked and chagrined that WWE listened to its audience for once, you should know that they were probably listening to their sponsors instead.

So from now on, send all your Roman Reigns hate mail to Snickers instead of WWE.

That's really true of any public company like that though. Sponsors pulling out and hard numbers of money lost speaks volumes to them.

A publicly traded company is always going to care about what a major sponsor thinks. That's not the funny part. What tickles me is that Snickers cared about the bad publicity generated by this story, but it's likely that WWE itself did not. Snickers would have received only a tiny fraction of the negative reaction generated by this match, in comparison with WWE itself. But they were still savvy enough to do something about it.

Rather than WWE responding appropriately to the fan outrage, one of their sponsors had to do it for them. It speaks to the company's stubborn mentality.

Whoah... I'd never heard these stories about Moolah before. How long has this been publicly known?
