Is The Rock really presidential material?

Postby AkydefGoldberg » May 17, '17, 4:30 am

So, after The Rock gave this extensive interview to GQ recently, all the talk around a future presidential bid has stoked up again (nicely timed for his Baywatch promotional work) and considering Trump made it all the way to the White House, Rock succeeding wouldn't be beyond the realm of imagination.

I'd vote for him based on who he is a person (he's articulate, funny, polite and a cool guy) but there has to be lot of substance behind his thinking and policies, for me. Liked his answer on the Muslim ban. I was under the impression he was a Republican based on a 2000 appearance at their convention but it seems it was part of a WWE push to encourage voting but no-one really knows which party he's leaning towards, if any.

We've seen in France, an independent coming out of nowhere to win the Presidency but doubt that could be translated in America from my understanding, but who knows..

Plenty of time of course, but if he wanted to run in 2020 he'd need to put some preparation and planning to do so and he's got movies in the pipeline till 2018.

Thoughts?

Could he win the presidency? Sure, Donald Trump just did. Now that being said, the way the election process is set up you have to build a lot of momentum leading up to the election and that process is almost never ending. He needs to think about it a lot more seriously starting pretty much now if that's what he wants to do.

We have established the absolutely lowest possible bar for what is considered presidential material in the United States, so take that how you will.

But if our choices were to end up being The Rock and Trump in 2020 I'd absolutely move to another country.

Wasn't Reagan an actor? So there is a precedent there.

I don't think he would really run anyway. Rock comes from pro wrestling, he knows how to work people :P

He's got a movie that just came out and another one about to come out as well. Given the political climate he knows damn well saying he might run against Trump will get in every paper and every website, which will also mention Fate of the Furious and Baywatch.

He didn't go straight from movies to the presidency, though. He was governor of California for a while and had been generally involved in politics even during his acting career.

But I mean, Reagan also put the fuckery of the economy and the elimination of the middle class into motion, so maybe not a great example :lol

Who are you to doubt The Rock? He'll lay the smackdown on your candy ass Steve! And ban you from US travel, instead of Muslims it'll be all Hanley's.

It's not like I'll ever have a chance to find out that I'm banned the way things are going. A trip to America is a bit of a tough sell these days.

Fuck no. There is a whole lot more to being president then being a cool dude. If Donald Trump has proven anything, it is that celebrities need to stay in their lane. Trump getting elected made a mockery of our whole electoral system, let's not double up on that mistake.

I assume by this, you mean not run for political office when ill-equipped to do so rather than actually voice political opinions? Sounded words similiar to what Piers Morgan regularly advocates for celebrities to shut up (namely to not criticise his friend Trump).

No, I mean don't run for president. Celebrities have every right to have opinions, just like any other person, but let's keep the leader of the free world to someone with experience. I don't even mind if celebrities want to run for office in their own state (Arnold in Cali). If they do it the way Reagan did then I would also be more willing to accept it.

Aside from generally being a better person, The Rock is probably even less qualified than Trump.

Give him a few years and Rock's business opportunities may be making more than Trump :P

Fuck it, can't be any worse than Trump surely?

Maybe not at the next election but if he was serious about going into politics he could start by running for congress/governer or similar (not 100% sure on the terminology in the us) and go from there.
