Facebook to start tracking US users across the web

In order to target ads towards users, they only used to track what you did on Facebook, such as what pages you liked. Now they're going to start tracking you based on your browsing activity on other sites, to target more effective and personal ads towards you.

Watching porn? Facebook want to know.

Just about every single website across the internet that involves user membership does this, yet it only becomes mainstream news when Facebook decides to do it. Why don't people demonize Google for using search history to create targeted ads?

Facebook sent out a notification to all of its users about this the other day, including information about how you can opt out of this (http://www.aboutads.info/choices/) which is more than basically any other site does to allow its users to keep control of their privacy.

I don't actually hate Facebook that much, I just hate how oblivious a lot of people seem to be over the shit they pull. They're not a very nice company.

Even if you opt out so you don't see the ads, they've still got a profile on you based on your browsing patterns.

Would you ever trust any company with the knowledge that you spend a lot of your time watching interracial gangbang porn, for example?

No, but if you ever want to have any membership at any site, this is the reality you have to face.

I'll ask again, why doesn't Google get demonized? They've been doing this for much longer, and to a much larger extent.

Google do get demonised for a lot of their actions, though Facebook take the brunt of it as they have a lot of things on you that Google don't have - your photos, family, friends, phone number, and now they're starting to remotely turn on your phone's microphone and listen in on what you're watching or listening to at any time. It's a lot more personal than Google.

That's rather naive :lol

I just looked this up because it seemed like something was being left out here, and the feature you're referring to is basically a potential upcoming optional add-on that people can use like Shazaam, where you play a bit of what you're listening to while you're making a status update and it tells you what the song is, and you can share that with your friends. It's not like they're constantly listening to you at all times.

Not really. Facebook is a much greater tool of gathering data on you than Google, all things considered - especially now that Google have the "right to be forgotten".

Optional, but still shady as fuck. I never said they were listening to you at all times either, only when you're making a status - but the fact that a company have issued an app which can remotely turn on phone microphones and listen to what you're doing is weird. Soon enough, I can see the feature becoming compulsory, too.

Facebook just seem to be constantly increasing the range of information they want you to share, so they can data mine you. I genuinely don't understand why so many people are okay with the things they do, even going to the extent where they defend the company's actions.

Do you understand how Shazaam works? Or anything about the new feature that Facebook is considering adding?

As we're debating the ethics of Facebook, here's some of the terms and conditions of the Facebook app, around the time I deleted my page - (bear in mind this has probably changed, for the worse, since then)

- Modify or delete the contents of your USB storage
- Draw over other apps, prevent your phone from sleeping
- Directly call other phone numbers, costing you money
- Change your audio settings, record audio, take pictures and videos
- Modify your contacts, read call log, read your contacts, write call log
- Read phonecalls

Why would they need those permissions? There's nothing to worry about though, clearly.

I'm sure I could do some research and find some simple justifications for most of these, but it's not really worth it. I agree that Facebook's use of data can be shady and that there is a disturbing trend in terms of privacy invasion in a lot of these sites, but the fact that you have a personal vendetta against the company makes it not worth researching.

I said above, I don't like them as they're shady but there's no personal vendetta. The thing I hate the most is that a lot of people don't bat an eye at what this company are doing with their information. It's for this reason why I also like debating topics like the NSA - so it's not just Facebook. As I said, no vendetta.

I hope you do find justifications for the Facebook app permission where it remotely makes phonecalls which cost me money, and delete my USB storage. I'd like to hear them.

The other day I noticed a part to my deep clean carpet steamer was broken so I searched various sites for a replacement part, one of wich was eBay, keep in mind I was not logged into my eBay account when looking at this one and only listing. 3 days later I log into my Facebook account and the very first ad on my wall was the listing for the broken part I looked at saying "this auction is ending soon, don't miss out on a great deal". WTF! How the fuck does fb know I looked at it when I was not logged into eBay or fb when I did look at it

Facebook, eBay, Skype, tons of other online sites deploy trackers to follow your browsing habits across websites and they build a profile on you, based on your interests. (Skype track here)

Use Ghostery or Disconnect to block trackers.

Usually I don't get the ads because I use NoScript. Or maybe I'm not noticing them . I've come to the conclusion that as long as no one has my bank account info, I'm fine. :lol y'all can see what kind of porn I watch , go ahead. I ain't ashamed, Zuckerberg.
