This is misleading. The "ask" button isn't just for relationship statuses -- it's for any of the fields on a person's profile that they've left blank.

The premise behind it though is to encourage users to share more about their private life than they initially wanted to, though. That's a bit weird.

Yeah I've seen the 'ask' button a few times when I'm looking at someone's profile. Always thought it would be a bit weird if I did decide to 'ask' someone randomly about their private life (whether that be relationship status, work etc). If they don't want to share that information on FB then that's up to them and it's not really my place to stick my nose in. At least that's how I see it.

It just seems a strange feature to add. If on Facebook someone has left a feature blank, it either means that they've forgotten to fill it out or just don't wish to. An ask button encourages users to pester others.

Think I've seen that advertised somewhere (maybe on FB?) but always seemed a cheap sorta dating so always ignored. Not a dating fan site fan, especially so after the miserable failure of POF or whatever it was called that guys on here were having no luck on.
